Woodworkers Discuss Thanksgiving, Tools and Adaptable Woodshops: Woodchat Transcript November 23, 2011

The day before Thanksgiving woodworkers got together on twitter to meet, discuss, problem solve, and encourage. Many thinks to the Woodchat team that made this happen while I was celebrating with family. Special thinks to @Tumblewood for the transcript.

The best way to contribute to woodchat is Tweetchat.

Woodchat Transcript November 23, 2011 6pm Pacific/9pm Eastern

@dividedlight Hey everyone. I’m in for the thanksgiving edition of woodchat. #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy Welcome @dividedlight! #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy @MansFineFurn That looks like a great sander! I’m thinking of a combo belt/disc unit #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy Anybody working on holiday gift projects? #woodchat

@woodbard Good evening. #woodchat

@sharpendwood Hey #woodchat, I’ll be around as much as I can

@MansFineFurn I use the lathe for disc sanding on the rare occasion I need to do it. #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy I am working on several cutting boards and jewelry boxes for the holidays #woodchat

@Seanw78 Hello all, What are we thankful for? #occupywoodshop #woodchat

@Tumblewood Sorry I’m late #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy Greetings @woodbard! #woodchat

@mamader Hey all! #woodchat

@dividedlight @MansFineFurn Hmm. I have a lathe. What sort of attachment for that? #woodchat

@DJOfurnituremkr @WoodworkGuy I’m making boxes that go to a gallery in Japan for gifts. #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy Able to get back into my shop after surgery in October RT @Seanw78: Hello all, What are we thankful for? #occupywoodshop #woodchat

@thewoodninja What’s on the plate tonight fellas? #woodchat

@Tumblewood I’m thankful I built my shop with a crawlspace!! It allows me to reroute electric and DC when I move machines #woodchat

@Tumblewood Good evening @mamader #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy @DJOfurnituremkr NICE I’m sure the recipients will say ” Domo arigato! ” #woodchat

@HighRockWW Putting a whole pig in the smoker right now…so I will be in and out tonight. #woodchat

@MansFineFurn @dividedlight make your own platen (turn a flat disc), stick the disc on, then U can build a raised table and clamp it on the bed #woodchat

@Tumblewood Definitely a good connection there, Dale #woodchat

@asliceofwood Hows everyone doing? #woodchat

@LaMacchiaDesign #woodchat what’s up everyone?

@Tumblewood I need to bring the Xmas tree in after this. #woodchat

@Tumblewood I took the week off and am almost done with the top on my Roubo. #woodchat

@dividedlight @MansFineFurn Excellent tip, really appreciate that one. #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy Probably do that this weekend. RT @Tumblewood: I need to bring the Xmas tree in after this. #woodchat

@SMeekWoodworks Hello there #woodchat! #woodchat

@MansFineFurn @MansFineFurn @dividedlight you can also just use a circle of MDF #woodchat

@woodbard @DJOfurnituremkr KUDOS, Dale, for trying to set record straight. Thankful for that. #woodchat

@Tumblewood Scott!! Welcome! #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy NICE! A great accomplishment! RT @Tumblewood: I took the week off and am almost done with the top on my Roubo. #woodchat

@JimAAshley Hi folks #woodchat

@sharpendwood RT @woodbard: @DJOfurnituremkr KUDOS, Dale, for trying to set record straight. Thankful for that. #woodchat

@asliceofwood I’ve already had thanksgiving diner, got to work tomorrow. Anyone doing special stuff? #woodchat

@DJOfurnituremkr Tomorrow I hope to get some studio time in. Most of today was spent waiting for AT&T and reading blog comments. #woodchat

@mamader New door going in this week where we normally put the xmas tree. gotta wait till next weekend for that. #woodchat

@MansFineFurn @Tumblewood Didn’t look like you took the week off, you looked like you were working pretty hard!! 😉 #woodchat

@Tumblewood I’m really happy that this pointed out some weaknesses in my shop layout #woodchat

@DyamiPlotke Hello, #woodchat. Looks like things are rolling already. How are everyone’s projects coming along?

@asliceofwood @Tumblewood we already set our tree up #woodchat

@Tumblewood @DJOfurnituremkr This has been quite the day for that #woodchat

@DJOfurnituremkr @woodbard Thanks Al. Seeing who the new target audience is really irritated me so I had to do something. #woodchat

@Tumblewood @DyamiPlotke Hey Dyami! #woodchat

@woodbard @DyamiPlotke Hi, Dyami. My main project was getting my back in shape. Almost there. #woodchat

@mamader @Tumblewood I always find it interesting how we evolve our shops as we grow with our projects #woodchat

@SMeekWoodworks I’m hoping to get into the shop and start a couple hand planes. Wanting to get a final version of my block plane available! #woodchat

@Tumblewood Great interview with @rudemechanic by @Woodwhisperer. Releasing next week on the free site. #woodchat

@woodbard @DJOfurnituremkr GREAT effort! Congrats – you’ve had LOTS of support from the community!!! #woodchat

@JC_McGrath Evening all #woodchat

@DyamiPlotke @Tumblewood what was wrong w/ the layout? #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy I’m planning to get into the shop Friday – Sunday and start milling for jewelry box projects #woodchat #occupywoodshop

@Tumblewood @SMeekWoodworks Tell Greg I’m gonna buy his Woodpecker rule #woodchat

@DyamiPlotke @Tumblewood howdy, Vic! #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy Hello all who recently entered #woodchat!

@dividedlight @Tumblewood looking forward to that. #woodchat

@woodbard @WoodworkGuy I *must* make seven (7!) jewelry boxes for seven (7!) granddaughters… #woodchat

@DyamiPlotke @woodbard hope it shapes up quickly, Al. #woodchat

@SMeekWoodworks @Tumblewood Yeah! How cool is that thing? Pretty exciting around the shop today. #woodchat

@Tumblewood So, what would everyone like to address tonight? We don’t have an official subject. #woodchat

@sharpendwood @SmeekWoodworks Got a peek at Jesse James shop last night on american chopper. Maybe your plane will make an appearance 🙂 #woodchat

@DJOfurnituremkr @SMeekWoodworks Jesse was on American Chopper last night. He was in his shop at a router table, I was looking for your plane. #woodchat

@woodbard @DyamiPlotke Thanks – almost there, in time to #occupyshop 🙂 #woodchat

@Tumblewood Since I’ve been reorganizing my machines, that is on my mind #woodchat

@LaMacchiaDesign #woodchat in Santa Cruz, CA for the holiday. Close to my old home in Marin. Good to be back in Cali.

@WoodworkGuy Sounds like my production schedule RT @woodbard: I *must* make seven (7!) jewelry boxes for seven (7!) granddaughters… #woodchat

@SMeekWoodworks @sharpendwood Nice, I’ll have to check that out. #woodchat

@thewoodninja I’m finishing a custom dresser & 2 end tables this week then starting a slant front secretary next week. Tiger maple & makore. #woodchat

@sharpendwood @DJOfurnituremkr Ha beat you to it! 🙂 #woodchat

@DyamiPlotke With any luck, I’ll have rough wiring & the base insulation done in the shop this weekend. #woodchat

@sduffy68 Good evening everyone! #woodchat

@Tumblewood @WoodworkGuy lol..you’d better get on that! #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy @DyamiPlotke that will be nice with winter setting in… #occupywoodshop #woodchat

@JC_McGrath Shortening my upper cabinets that I made too tall #woodchat

@DJOfurnituremkr @sharpendwood I type slow 😉 #woodchat

@DyamiPlotke @thewoodninja sounds like you’re a busy ninja. #woodchat

@Tumblewood @DyamiPlotke @Underscore_Funk is making good progress on his shop/basement remodel. #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy @Tumblewood Tell me about it. Build two last year. Now EVERYBODY wants one. #woodchat

@woodbard @JC_McGrath Ouch! BTDT – best wishes, Jon. #woodchat

@Tumblewood I type all the time, so I’m fast. #woodchat

@thewoodninja @DyamiPlotke Just wish I could charge more & work less! #woodchat

@Tumblewood Plus, I’m using the #woodchat on Tweetchat and don’t have to type the #woodchat #woodchat

@woodbard @Tumblewood I am only half-fast…say that fast LOL #woodchat

@DyamiPlotke @WoodworkGuy yeah. I had to put my bench build on hold. The shop has needed insulation for years. About time I did it. #woodchat

@sduffy68 What is the topic tonight? #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy LOL RT @woodbard: @Tumblewood I am only half-fast…say that fast LOL #woodchat

@Tumblewood @thewoodninja Have you figured out an “hourly rate”? #woodchat

@JC_McGrath @woodbard not any fun but hey still shop time making the best of it #woodchat

@DJOfurnituremkr @thewoodninja Charge more & work less. I think I heard that somewhere before 😉 #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy @DyamiPlotke Ya can build the bench this winter in a WARM, electrified shop! #occupywoodshop #woodchat

@Tumblewood @sduffy68 I was actually asking what everyone would like to address. You? #woodchat

@DyamiPlotke @Tumblewood @Underscore_Funk yes he is. Hopefully my simpler wall design will let me leapfrog him. #woodchat

@woodbard @JC_McGrath True – that’s the best part, for sure! #woodchat

@thewoodninja @Tumblewood Yeah but it’s very difficult to get here in South Louisiana. #woodchat

@MansFineFurn I was going to suggest this as a topic: pricing and labor rate RT @Tumblewood: @thewoodninja Have you figured out an “hourly rate” #woodchat

@SMeekWoodworks It’s great to see things busy on here tonight! Glad it’s been brought back. #woodchat

@woodbard @DJOfurnituremkr Perzacktly! That is the key to narrowing clientele to a few high-paying jobs. #woodchat

@DyamiPlotke @thewoodninja why not? Increase you price until the workload slows to what you want it to be. #woodchat

@thewoodninja @DJOfurnituremkr All I want is an honest weeks pay for an honest days work… #woodchat

@woodbard RT @DyamiPlotke: @thewoodninja why not? Increase you price until the workload slows to what you want it to be. #woodchat

@DyamiPlotke @sduffy68 we seem to be going random, though shop activity has come up a bit. #woodchat

@Tumblewood I just got the new Woodwork magazine. I haven’t had a chance to read yet, but amazing articles. #woodchat

@sduffy68 @ tumblewood If there isn’t a current topic; I’d like to ask about a good set of chisels. My budget is limited with the holidays. #woodchat

@dividedlight @MansFineFurn That would be a good topic. #woodchat

@HighRockWW @WoodworkGuy good stuff! #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson What’s the topic tonight. I just remembered woodchat #woodchat

@woodbard Never figured out the “per hour” rate thing. Never bothered with it. #woodchat

@thewoodninja @DyamiPlotke LOL. It’s just difficult to find the balance between getting what the work is worth & keeping food on the table #woodchat

@SMeekWoodworks @sduffy68 I’ve heard a lot of good about the Narex chisels #woodchat

@JimAAshley @sduffy68 I like so far the Narex ones Lee Valley is selling #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy It’s all supply and demand. You SUPPLY the products and DEMAND they pay for them…. #woodchat

@woodbard @sduffy68 What will you use the chisels for? #woodchat

@sharpendwood @woodbard How do you charge then? #woodchat

@SMeekWoodworks @sduffy68 Also, I love the couple of the new Stanley Sweetheart chisels I’ve gotten. #woodchat

@Tumblewood @DyamiPlotke That’s the way to do it. Add your overhead costs, figure in a decent wage and then play with the formula from there #woodchat

@mamader @sduffy68 I bought a set of pfeils earlier this year, love them! #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson @woodbard Figuring out the per hour for something I built in my shop scares me. #woodchat

@dividedlight @woodbard I still worry that the economy is slow. I know high priced trades people with no work. #woodchat

@DJOfurnituremkr @Tumblewood Check out the editors note. You should submit your Gretchens cradle. I’m submitting the Autumn table. #woodchat

@HighRockWW #woodchat ok pigs on… What we talking about? http://t.co/sJxwZW1c

@JimAAshley Good point.. Narex has bench bevel and mortise ones.RT @woodbard: @sduffy68 What will you use the chisels for? #woodchat

@DyamiPlotke @sduffy68 since I took Carabini’s Chisel seminar at #WIA11, I can’t decide what a good set of chisels is. #woodchat

@woodbard @sharpendwood One table: $3K and up, depending on details. Could be as high as $7K or $8K, depending on stuff. #woodchat

@Tumblewood @mamader Nice..those are supposed to be very well made #woodchat

@MansFineFurn @woodbard I set price based on estimated time to complete, work until it’s done, poorly tracking hours -always more than est #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson I seriously need to upgrade chisels I have a set of Buck Bros. #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy Pricing RT @HighRockWW: #woodchat ok pigs on… What we talking about? http://t.co/agkTKkHh

@HighRockWW @SMeekWoodworks are you in Asheville for thanksgiving? #woodchat

@dividedlight @sduffy68 I’ve seen a lot on chisels lately. Everyone loves narex. I use them too. #woodchat

@sduffy68 My currents are Stanley FatMax, please don’t laugh. I know its time to step up!!! #woodchat

@woodbard Mortise chisels => Ray Iles #woodchat

@Tumblewood @benjamenjohnson Honestly, my old Marples are not bad chisels #woodchat

@DyamiPlotke @Tumblewood that’s how we run a profitable business at work. #woodchat Knowing overhead is Key.

@woodbard RT @Tumblewood: @benjamenjohnson Honestly, my old Marples are not bad chisels #woodchat

@SMeekWoodworks @HighRockWW Yup. Unable to make it back to see family this year, and Lori is working Friday. #woodchat

@JimAAshley Just be prepared to work on the Narex ones… flatten and hone #woodchat

@MansFineFurn I use LN chisels, awesome, but pricey. Hear the new stanleys are close in quality, same style exactly #woodchat

@Tumblewood @woodbard I really don’t see me buying Mortise chisels anytime soon. I have a router for that! ;o) #woodchat

@sduffy68 Wow this chat comes at 100mph!!! Thanks for all the responses. The Narex have been on my radar, so sounds positive. #woodchat

@thewoodninja Cooking my Thx giving bird tomorrow in my shop made cajun microwave. Hope you all have a great turkey day BTW! #woodchat

@mamader @Tumblewood The Pfeils are very well made and hold their edge very well. Worth the $$$ #woodchat

@Tumblewood @JimAAshley That’s a must for most brands #woodchat

@MansFineFurn @DyamiPlotke and getting good estimates of time (I put in alot more hrs than I estimate up front) #woodchat

@DyamiPlotke RT @Tumblewood @DyamiPlotke Thats the way 2 do it Add overhead costs figure in a decent wage & then play w/ the formula from there #woodchat

@SMeekWoodworks @MansFineFurn Yup, just take more time flattening the backs on the Stanleys #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson @Tumblewood My buck bros aren’t horrible either, they just aren’t very hard so I have to touch them up often #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy We’re brining the bird overnight. It’ll hit the oven tomorrow #woodchat

@Tumblewood @thewoodninja I’m hoping to have most of my time in the shop. #woodchat

@Morton @RenaissanceWW and I are reviewing the Narex mortise chisels. Will be out in a month, but I think he’s already worked w/them #woodchat

@HighRockWW @SMeekWoodworks you guys are welcome to come up, we have a big group of who ever shows up. #woodchat

@DyamiPlotke @woodbard @Tumblewood @benjamenjohnson I have old Marples. They’re solid, good chisels. #woodchat

@Tumblewood @WoodworkGuy That’s a tasty way to cook one. #woodchat

@JimAAshley @Tumblewood exactly. I know some like LN are “ready to go”, other brands need to be worked. #woodchat

@Tumblewood Anyone have flow issues in the shop? #woodchat

@Tumblewood @Morton I still need to catch up on your Highland spots #woodchat

@woodbard @Tumblewood Most people don’t – but sometimes they are a good back-up. Most stuff I use FMT and Super FMT. #woodchat

@SMeekWoodworks @Tumblewood I don’t have enough room in my personal shop to have flow issues. lol #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson @Tumblewood You mean like I can;t flow over to that side of the shop because there’s junk in my way? #woodchat

@MansFineFurn @Tumblewood Anyone NOT have flow issues? #woodchat

@Tumblewood @Morton I need to catch up on your Highland spots #woodchat

@woodbard @Tumblewood Flow as in…? DC? #woodchat

@mamader @Tumblewood yeah, definite flow issues in my shop. #woodchat

@DJOfurnituremkr I like my LN’s but still prefer Japanese a bit more. #woodchat

@sduffy68 @woodbard My primary uses are cleaning joints; dovetails and box joints. I intend to start on M&T’s in the near future too. #woodchat

@sharpendwood RT @MansFineFurn: @Tumblewood Anyone NOT have flow issues? #woodchat

@asliceofwood I know the feeling. RT @benjamenjohnson: @Tumblewood You mean like I can;t flow over to that side of the shop because theres junk #woodchat

@Tumblewood @SMeekWoodworks LOL..I’m sorry, Scott..you deserve a nice space. #woodchat

@MansFineFurn @rudemechanic did a review of the stanley sweethearts not too long ago, they didn’t need much work either (@sduffy68) #woodchat

@woodbard @sduffy68 All hand-cut DTs and box joints? #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson I got a bagster for remodeling my bathroom, I’ve been using it to through out a bunch of materials I haven’t touched in years. #woodchat

@Tumblewood @asliceofwood well..I moved my BS and drum sander and will be moving my TS and jointer a bit. #woodchat

@DyamiPlotke @MansFineFurn yeah. Pay attention to how long it took last time so you’ll know for next time. #woodchat

@Tumblewood @asliceofwood all to accommodate longer stock #woodchat

@SMeekWoodworks @Tumblewood Honestly, it’s not bad. I just need to build a bench! Luckily, I have a great place at GPD I can work in when I need #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson Cleaning out some of the junk helps, but there’s never enough room! #woodchat

@asliceofwood @Tumblewood I have my ts right in the middle of the shop. I’m thinking I need to almost move it closer to one side #woodchat

@sduffy68 @woodbard yes handcut or hand gnawed take your pick. But I am improving!!! #woodchat

@thewoodninja @benjamenjohnson AMEN! #woodchat

@Tumblewood @DyamiPlotke Hours Tracker is a really good app for tracking time and expense. #woodchat

@JimAAshley My piles of stuff just seem to migrate from one spot to another lol #woodchat

@asliceofwood @benjamenjohnson I keep trying to clean junk out, but more junk appears. From where, I don’t know. #woodchat

@MansFineFurn @DyamiPlotke every job a bit different so far, and paying attention to the hrs put in (without counting diversions) is tough #woodchat

@DyamiPlotke I must step away for a few minutes. Please continue chatting. #woodchat

@Tumblewood @asliceofwood I actually moved the BS off the wall and into the center with the TS #woodchat

@SMeekWoodworks I actually prefer my current 300 sq ft shop to my past 4k sq ft shop. #woodchat

@Tumblewood I can resaw 12′ boards now. #woodchat

@DJOfurnituremkr I work in a space under 200sf and it actually works very for me and the type of work I do. #woodchat

@MansFineFurn @Tumblewood Thanks, I’ll look at that one! #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson As for flow, I’ve implemented a clear the bench policy before I leave the shop. It’s nice having a clean bench at least #woodchat

@asliceofwood @Tumblewood I need to get a bs. Just a good one that will last a long time #woodchat

@SMeekWoodworks @asliceofwood Shop gremlins. They are tricky little turds. #woodchat

@thewoodninja I’m finding that excluding horizontal surfaces in my shop is helping me to put things back where they go throughout the day #woodchat

@DyamiPlotke @MansFineFurn track the steps. Most different projects still are made up by similar steps. #woodchat

@Tumblewood @asliceofwood I have the Rikon Deluxe…it’s a nice machine for the money #woodchat

@JimAAshley Same here RT @asliceofwood: @Tumblewood I need to get a bs. Just a good one that will last a long time #woodchat

@MansFineFurn @Tumblewood how often to you see needing to resaw 12′ ers? #woodchat

@sleepydogwood Hey guys I almost forgot woodchat tonight #woodchat

@asliceofwood They hide in dusty corners. RT @SMeekWoodworks: @asliceofwood Shop gremlins. They are tricky little turds. #woodchat

@thewoodninja @DyamiPlotke very good point #woodchat

@asliceofwood @Tumblewood what size? #woodchat

@dividedlight @DyamiPlotke @MansFineFurn Do you guys add in for non shop time like design, gettng materials, looking at projects? #woodchat

@Tumblewood I would probably get a 17″ Griz now..but, this will do. #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson @asliceofwood you and me, and all of us! It must breed! #woodchat

@MansFineFurn @DyamiPlotke true, I’ve done a ton of project management and do break it down, just never stick to allotted times (perfectionist) #woodchat

@JimAAshley @sleepydogwood howdy #woodchat

@woodbard WTH! TweetChat keeps knocking me out. #woodchat

@Tumblewood @asliceofwood I have the 12″ ..12″ resaw cap #woodchat

@SMeekWoodworks @dividedlight YES! Always. #woodchat

@thewoodninja I don’t have shop gremlins. My shop is too full of shop mice & shop snakes #woodchat

@woodbard May be I am typing too fast? LOL #woodchat

@Tumblewood My entire shop is geared around a 12″ capacity #woodchat

@asliceofwood Knock it back, show it whos boss. RT @woodbard: WTH! TweetChat keeps knocking me out. #woodchat

@Tumblewood @woodbard Not having that problem, Al #woodchat

@JimAAshley my biggest problem in my shop is ceiling height, just over 6′. (house built in 1860) so 14″ bandsaw is prob max for me #woodchat

@asliceofwood @Tumblewood i’m interested in the resaw cap. I want to buy more rough lumber to mill up. #woodchat

@sharpendwood Oh crap, inlaws here #woodchat

@MansFineFurn I’d be interested to know if anyone would be interested in doing a peer review of time/cost estimates for each other’s projects? #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson @thewoodninja You need a shop cat #woodchat

@woodbard @asliceofwood LOL – anyone else having similar problem? #woodchat

@sduffy68 On the bandsaw topic, anyone have the grizzly 14″ extreme? That’s the one I’m considering after the first of the year (tax time). #woodchat

@sleepydogwood I wish I could resaw 12″ but 6 is all can di #woodchat

@asliceofwood @JimAAshley thats tight to flip lumber around, i’d hit the ceiling all the time #woodchat

@SMeekWoodworks @thewoodninja Shop snakes. Sounds like all kinds of excitement! #woodchat

@Tumblewood When I first started looking at shop set up..I research bd ft costs and there is a big jump after 12″ stock #woodchat

@JimAAshley @asliceofwood Yeah, I have to watch what I’m doing for sure. #woodchat

@sduffy68 @woodbard no typing fast is never a problem for me. One finger at a time. #woodchat

@kdwmson Hello all. First time to actually connect as versus reading after the fact #woodchat

@MansFineFurn @JimAAshley same here. built an addition, dug deeper (with alot of added drainage since I went below the 100yr flood line) #woodchat

@mamader @sduffy68 I have the G0555P which I believe the extreme is based off of, but with a few added features. I reaally like it #woodchat

@thewoodninja @SMeekWoodworks You have NO idea! Found the last snake in my Stanley Vidmar as I reached in for pocket hole screws! #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy Welcome! RT @kdwmson: Hello all. First time to actually connect as versus reading after the fact #woodchat

@Tumblewood @Tumblewood the biggest $$ machine was my jointer. I got the 12″ Griz G0609X #woodchat

@JimAAshley @sduffy68 I like the Grizzly stuff, for bs, i’d also check out Rikon, heard good things. I also use tax time to fund shop upgrade. #woodchat

@sduffy68 @kdwmson welcome to the madness. #woodchat

@woodbard @kdwmson Hi, Kevin! We are practically neighbors! Near St Joseph here. #woodchat

@MansFineFurn @sduffy68 Yes, I like mine, it’s done everything I asked of it so far (I don’t baby my tools…get the riser #woodchat

@kdwmson Thanks woodwork guy #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy YIKES! RT @thewoodninja: @SMeekWoodworks Found the last snake in my Stanley Vidmar as I reached in for pocket hole screws! #woodchat

@kdwmson @sduffy68 thanks #woodchat

@sleepydogwood I finally got a D8 and for 5$ #woodchat

@kdwmson @woodbard Thanks. St. Joe not far. Good friend from there. #woodchat

@asliceofwood @kdwmson welcome!!! enjoy the night with us! #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy Speed reading and typing helps in #woodchat

@Tumblewood @WoodworkGuy I’d hurt myself if there was a snake in the shop #woodchat

@dividedlight @sleepydogwood same here. I’ve been thinking of adding the riser block to increase capacity. #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson @thewoodninja you have a Vidmar? nice! #woodchat

@JimAAshley @MansFineFurn nice! If I do an addition at some point, will remember that. Lots of old houses here in new england. #woodchat

@asliceofwood still can’t read fast enough. RT @WoodworkGuy: Speed reading and typing helps in #woodchat

@Tumblewood @sleepydogwood What is a D8? #woodchat

@thewoodninja @MansFineFurn I like your time/cost idea. Would be interesting to compare based on local as well #woodchat

@sduffy68 @MansFineFurn yea the riser is a must! How is the miter gauge quality? #woodchat

@dividedlight @SMeekWoodworks I’m not changing enough then. #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy Something would be hurt in mine… RT @Tumblewood: @WoodworkGuy I’d hurt myself if there was a snake in the shop #woodchat

@woodbard @dividedlight Adding riser block, at what HP? #woodchat

@thewoodninja @benjamenjohnson it was free. I love it but would never pay the money. $1800 for the one I have. #woodchat

@MansFineFurn @JimAAshley i’d build a barn if I had enough land #woodchat

@Tumblewood @sduffy68 I wanted to avoid riser blocks..so, went with Rikon #woodchat

@sleepydogwood I have a ridget BS so I just got sure how well a riser performs on them not much info #woodchat

@dividedlight @sduffy68 I own that bandsaw. #woodchat

@sduffy68 @woodbard 1.5 hp #woodchat

@asliceofwood Dreams RT @MansFineFurn: @JimAAshley id build a barn if I had enough land #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy There are also books, like “Pricing Your Work” out there for reference #woodchat

@JimAAshley @MansFineFurn there you go! I would too… or at least some sort of ext off of garage #woodchat

@dividedlight @woodbard Hmm. 1.0 to 1.5 I think. 14″ grizzly #woodchat

@MansFineFurn @sduffy68 it’s ok, rarely use it, but it seems solid, no slop #woodchat

@woodbard @Tumblewood I would suggest Not adding riser blocks, if possible. But sometimes it is a quick solution. #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy The Grizzly Band Saw? RT @dividedlight: @sduffy68 I own that bandsaw. #woodchat

@sduffy68 @Tumblewood the rikon has been on my list too, but i read a few negative reviews. maybe i should revisit #woodchat

@asliceofwood @WoodworkGuy I always guess a price and hope the customer takes the bite #woodchat

@woodbard @dividedlight What do you plan to resaw? HP might limit what you can resaw. That, and blade. #woodchat

@SMeekWoodworks National average shop rate for cabinet shops is $57.34 an hour, FWIW #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy @asliceofwood Don’t underestimate your time and talent, though. #woodchat

@JC_McGrath “@Tumblewood: @sleepydogwood What is a D8? #woodchat” ? Same question what is a D8?

@asliceofwood @woodworkguy but usually it is almost close enough to be ok, getting better on pricing #woodchat

@Tumblewood @WoodworkGuy I believe the 17″ Griz BS can resaw 12″ #woodchat

@mamader @woodbard I don’t have a riser block on mine, been debating it. Doubt I buy another BS for a long time, so if i ever do any resaw #woodchat

@sleepydogwood I have used to rikon it’s a nice saw but adjusting and changing blades are a pain #woodchat

@copedog @SMeekWoodworks Where did you find the $57.34 figure? I am curioius.. Thanks for the stats.. #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy That would be handy… RT @Tumblewood: @WoodworkGuy I believe the 17″ Griz BS can resaw 12″ #woodchat

@asliceofwood @WoodworkGuy i did that at the beginning, but getting better at it. I don’t want to sell myself short #woodchat

@Tumblewood @SMeekWoodworks Good info!! #woodchat

@sduffy68 @woodbard on the rikon the resaw capacity is the same as adding a riser. what’s the difference? #woodchat

@MansFineFurn @SMeekWoodworks wow, that’s good money, too bad I put in 10X the work I estimate…probably like $4/hr 😉 #woodchat

@Tumblewood RT @SMeekWoodworks: National average shop rate for cabinet shops is $57.34 an hour, FWIW< @JC_McGrath @sleepydogwood I have the Rikon 18″ and loving it #woodchat

@woodbard @Tumblewood I have the Grizzly 17″, and 12 inch is capacity. It is rare that I have to go that wide. #woodchat

@dividedlight @woodbard I mostly rip skins for exterior doors which it handles fine without the block. Turning blanks could use more height. #woodchat

@Tumblewood @sduffy68 stability. it’s all one piece on the Rikon #woodchat

@SMeekWoodworks @copedog A professional cabinet maker magazine does a survey every couple years. #woodchat

@woodbard @sduffy68 HP may be the biggest difference. 2HP or more for the larger machines. #woodchat

@kdwmson @asliceofwood I guess more than anything also. Have learned it takes at least twice as long as I think! #woodchat

@sleepydogwood Woodcraft has a great price on them this month #woodchat

@SMeekWoodworks @copedog Unfortunately, my mind is blanking on the name. #woodchat

@Tumblewood @woodbard I wish I’d bought the Griz 17″, because of curve work #woodchat

@mamader Riser block on the 14″ griz will give 12 inch, otherwise it is 6″ #woodchat

@copedog @SMeekWoodworks Custom Woodworking Business? I used to have a subs.. #woodchat

@asliceofwood @kdwmson oh yeah. I have started adding a little bit of extra time to the guesstimate quote #woodchat

@theboisshop Damn, I’m tardy tonight. #woodchat

@sduffy68 @woodbard @tumblewood excellent points about stability and HP. Thanks! #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy Welcome! Better late than never… RT @theboisshop: Damn, I’m tardy tonight. #woodchat

@mamader @Tumblewood Vic, that rikon isn’t good for curve work? #woodchat

@Tumblewood I hogged through a 12″ 6×6 timber today with a 3tpi Timberwolf blade…1.5HP #woodchat

@asliceofwood @theboisshop never too late #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson Anybody going to any Black Friday Sales like Rockler? Or are you going to hide in your shop? #woodchat

@JimAAshley @theboisshop Hi Rob, welcome #woodchat

@sduffy68 @theboisshop detention hall for a week #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy Yes indeed! RT @sduffy68: @woodbard @tumblewood excellent points about stability and HP. Thanks! #woodchat

@Tumblewood @theboisshop Funny, you don’t LOOK tardy..VH #woodchat

@woodbard @Tumblewood Curve work using a 12-inch capacity? Or just for curve work? #woodchat

@Tumblewood @mamader not a big enough table for larger pieces #woodchat

@MansFineFurn @benjamenjohnson SHOP #woodchat

@SMeekWoodworks @copedog CabinetMaker magazine: http://t.co/UgAeKcCJ #woodchat

@JimAAshley @benjamenjohnson hide, I have Christmas gifts to work on. #woodchat

@theboisshop I do some pretty good curve work with my Rikon 14″ and a 1/4″ 10 TPI blade #woodchat

@Tumblewood @benjamenjohnson Hiding in the shop #woodchat

@mamader @Tumblewood ahhh….. Thought about making a larger table for it? #woodchat

@sleepydogwood @Tumblewood @smeekwoodworks My uncle lower his to 35 and still went out of business last month #woodchat

@asliceofwood does HP matter on the bs’s? #woodchat

@Tumblewood @theboisshop ? you have the same as me the 12″ deluxe, right? #woodchat

@thewoodninja Gotta go early tonight guys. Thx. I enjoyed it while it lasted. Happy Thanksgiving to you all! #woodchat

@Tumblewood @theboisshop plus, I’m talking really big pieces. the 12″ table cap is limiting #woodchat

@JimAAshley @thewoodninja have a good one, happy Thanksgiving! #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy Take care @thewoodninja Happy Turkey Weekend! #woodchat

@woodbard @thewoodninja To you too, Kenny! Have a great one!!! #woodchat

@asliceofwood @thewoodninja have a good one #woodchat

@mamader @asliceofwood depends on what you are wanting to do. I have a 1hp on my 14″ and with a good blade I can resaw with it #woodchat

@Tumblewood @asliceofwood not according to Michael Fortune. you can resaw fine with a 1/2 HP. #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson I thought about it, but I hate crowds. Plus I have a shower surround I gotta install. #woodchat

@Tumblewood @thewoodninja Happy T Day #woodchat

@SMeekWoodworks My best advice related to pricing: Keep your overhead as low as humanly possible. Don’t go into debt. #woodchat

@sduffy68 @thewoodninja Happy Thanksgiving!!! #woodchat

@sleepydogwood He was paying 900$ in rent on his shop he was doing bids but would only get 1 out of 25 #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy GREAT advice these days! RT @SMeekWoodworks: Keep your overhead as low as humanly possible. Don’t go into debt. #woodchat

@Tumblewood @SMeekWoodworks word…out of pocket only. Never debt. especially in this economy #woodchat

@mamader @asliceofwood A good blade is more important then HP…… But HP helps #woodchat

@asliceofwood I’m thinking a do it all bs. What kind of hp? #woodchat

@MansFineFurn @Tumblewood all about the feed rate @asliceofwood If you go too fast, a lower hp will bog down, but you can do it #woodchat

@RenaissanceWW What up #woodchat, just gave new life to an old moulding plane in an HTS demo, what did I miss?

@SMeekWoodworks @sleepydogwood Yeah, it’s a tough market for sure. #woodchat

@asliceofwood @mamader whats the best size blade? #woodchat

@DJOfurnituremkr @SMeekWoodworks I’m so happy I have very low overhead. #woodchat

@asliceofwood @MansFineFurn yeah that makes sense #woodchat

@Tumblewood @MansFineFurn blows me away, the timbers I have were resawn on BS mill #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy Like a thin kerf blade on a 1.5 HP TS RT @mamader: @asliceofwood A good blade is more important then HP…… But HP helps #woodchat

@JimAAshley @RenaissanceWW Hi Shannon #woodchat

@Tumblewood @asliceofwood for what? #woodchat

@sleepydogwood @thewoodninja happy thanksgiving to you and your family #woodchat

@mamader @asliceofwood Believe it or not, i have resawed with a 1/4″ blade with okay results. I would go with at lest a 1/2″ though #woodchat

@SMeekWoodworks @RenaissanceWW One of these days, I really will join the HTS. I drool everytime you announce what you are doing. #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson @DJOfurnituremkr I have about 10 feet of overhead 😉 #woodchat

@Tumblewood @DJOfurnituremkr Then you are buying enough knuckle bones for Porter! #woodchat

@asliceofwood @Tumblewood curves #woodchat

@JimAAshley Gotta run a bit early tonight folks, Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!! #woodchat

@theboisshop @RenaissanceWW Glad you showed up, I’m not the last one now 😉 #woodchat

@Tumblewood @RenaissanceWW Nice..thanks for stopping in Teach! #woodchat

@MansFineFurn ditto RT @SMeekWoodworks: @RenaissanceWW One of these days, I really will join the HTS. I drool everytime … #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy Take care Jim. Happy Thanksgiving RT @JimAAshley: Gotta run a bit early tonight folks, Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!! #woodchat

@Tumblewood @JimAAshley Night Jim #woodchat

@DJOfurnituremkr @Tumblewood His thing is Milkbones and Beggin Strips. #woodchat

@mamader @asliceofwood 3/4″ if your BS will truely accept it. (some are speced for it, but they don’t work well) #woodchat

@Tumblewood @asliceofwood 1/4″ is what I use..or 3/8″ depends. #woodchat

@sduffy68 @JimAAshley Happy Thanksgiving!!! #woodchat

@kdwmson I struggle a lot with my bandsaw. Much to learn. Very poor luck resawing. Suggestions for good book? #woodchat

@RenaissanceWW @theboisshop I’m all about making you look good Rob #woodchat

@dividedlight Me too. Shop next to my house. Tools paid for. RT @DJOfurnituremkr: @SMeekWoodworks Im so happy I have very low overhead. #woodchat

@Tumblewood @DJOfurnituremkr my girls have a couple raw knuckle bones I let them chew in the yard for an hour/day #woodchat

@woodbard @WoodworkGuy Same here. Happy Thanksgiving to all. Have a wonderful time with loved ones!!! #woodchat

@asliceofwood I’ll have to look into buying a bs. I feel like my shop would run so much better with one. #woodchat

@mamader @kdwmson keep practicing on it. you will get the hang of it. #woodchat

@MansFineFurn @kdwmson Michael Fortune wrote a good article recently in FWW. He seems to be the BS guru these days #woodchat

@RenaissanceWW @MansFineFurn @SMeekWoodworks hey I’m not going anywhere and it only gets better over time so whenever you’re ready #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson I must be a little slow tonight I just figured out BS is bandsaw. Duh… #woodchat

@Tumblewood @kdwmson get with me after and I’ll find Michael Fortunes set up method..it’s low tension..works very well for me #woodchat

@MansFineFurn @asliceofwood I do almost everything on my BS now that I used to do on the TS. Soon, I will get rid of that TS #woodchat

@mamader @asliceofwood Definitely look into it. Go with at least a 14″ with 1HP. Bigger if your budget will allow. #woodchat

@JC_McGrath Lots to do in the am for t-day, goodnight all. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving, great chat tonight. #woodchat

@asliceofwood @benjamenjohnson lol its ok #woodchat

@MansFineFurn @benjamenjohnson BS is something else too, we don’t tolerate it here though 😉 #woodchat

@sleepydogwood @mamader @asliceofwood mine says it will but I have never tried one #woodchat

@RenaissanceWW @MansFineFurn been more than 2 years w/o a TS and my BS hasn’t stuttered yet. Love the extra space too #woodchat

@Tumblewood @RenaissanceWW Shannon..can you send me another email? I keep forgetting to pay my tuition #woodchat

@asliceofwood It seems safer than having a TS as well. #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy @JC_McGrath Take care JC Happy Thanksgiving! #woodchat

@sduffy68 Any of the bloggers care to be a mentor for a wannabe blogger? I am trying to start one and just looking for general guidance. #woodchat

@Tumblewood @RenaissanceWW if I didn’t own a TS already, I’d stick with a couple BSs #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy Yes especially for resawing RT @asliceofwood: It seems safer than having a TS as well. #woodchat

@RenaissanceWW @asliceofwood at least it feels safer and that is all that really matters #woodchat

@MansFineFurn @RenaissanceWW You’re my inspiration for losing the TS… #woodchat

@theboisshop @kdwmson Your bandsaw is worth investing time in fine tuning and getting to know. It will repay you 10x if you do. #woodchat

@Tumblewood @sduffy68 I just set up with Blogger..super easy..not as versatile as Word press, though #woodchat

@asliceofwood @RenaissanceWW you still have a bs? just kidding. #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson @sduffy68 What advice are you looking for? #woodchat

@mamader @Tumblewood even TWW said he is using his more now on his latest video #woodchat

@RenaissanceWW @asliceofwood for a while anyway, until I sell it and buy a bigger one! #woodchat

@MansFineFurn Just a matter of time…RT @asliceofwood: @RenaissanceWW you still have a bs? just kidding. #woodchat

@RenaissanceWW @asliceofwood some call the BS the neanderthal’s apprentice #woodchat

@asliceofwood @RenaissanceWW bigger is better, sometimes. #woodchat

@Tumblewood @theboisshop definitely..make sure the wheels are dead on coplaner #woodchat

@DJOfurnituremkr @sduffy68 Try to make regular posts. I’m terrible with that and need to work on updating more often. #woodchat

@sleepydogwood This is what I have been working on carving of chocolate covered bananas and cheesecakes with nuts #woodchat http://t.co/WHK8CCDs

@Tumblewood @RenaissanceWW I call ALL my corded slaves apprentices #woodchat

@Tumblewood @DJOfurnituremkr I was gonna say. LOL #woodchat

@MKatFWW Quick howdy. Pulled out some apple wood that I cut up about 18 months ago. Using it for drawer fronts on small wall shelf. #woodchat

@mamader a good band saw is indispensable. I started turning recently, and use the band saw a lot in relation to it. #woodchat

@sduffy68 @tumblewood @benjamenjohnson Well I know it sounds ignorant but just where to start. I setup a Blogger site, but need direction. #woodchat

@Tumblewood @DJOfurnituremkr @sduffy68 I only post when I have subject matter. #woodchat

@asliceofwood Must have a full staff. RT @Tumblewood: @RenaissanceWW I call ALL my corded slaves apprentices #woodchat

@theboisshop @RenaissanceWW That reminds me I owe you footage of that frame saw from WIA #woodchat

@Torch02 Sorry to miss #woodchat, I was doing some more work on my shop floor

@MansFineFurn @Tumblewood Its a great perspective, I always feel guilty turning to power, when I could do it by hand, then I think – apprentice #woodchat

@SMeekWoodworks @MKatFWW Nice. I need to find some Apple wood blanks big enough for a plane or two one of these days. #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson @DJOfurnituremkr @sduffy68 It’s much easier blogging for someone else than yourself. #woodchat

@mamader @sduffy68 just start posting your thoughts and projects. Thats what I do on mine. #woodchat

@MansFineFurn @MKatFWW Love apple wood #woodchat

@Tumblewood @sduffy68 First pick a template and them start designing it. It’s all pretty plug and play on Blogger #woodchat

@SMeekWoodworks @Tumblewood Speaking of subject matter… 😉 #woodchat

@RenaissanceWW @theboisshop I’m working with a local blacksmith to create some parts to build my own. Totally unnecessary but way cool #woodchat

@dividedlight @mamader Turning is the one area that seems to require more than 6″ BS capacity. #woodchat

@Tumblewood @SMeekWoodworks I’ll post again when I get the top of this Roubo done. #woodchat

@asliceofwood Everyone i’ve got to go. Had fun tonight. Have a great thanksgiving. #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson @sduffy68 The platform doesn’t really matter. Write your posts where ever you feel comfortable. #woodchat

@Tumblewood @SMeekWoodworks Hopefully, tomorrow #woodchat

@mamader @dividedlight agreed, I am probably going to have to break down and get the riser block before long. #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy Have a great holiday! RT @asliceofwood: Everyone i’ve got to go. Had fun tonight. Have a great thanksgiving. #woodchat

@MKatFWW @MansFineFurn Mine is planing as easily as madrone. Nice smell, too. Very pretty stuff. #woodchat

@Tumblewood @asliceofwood enjoy tomorrow…turkey coma! #woodchat

@Tumblewood @MKatFWW hey Matt #woodchat

@MansFineFurn @MKatFWW never planed madrone, but It’s so silky and sweet #woodchat

@sleepydogwood @MansFineFurn @MKatFWW I have some I am going to use on a strummer back #woodchat

@MKatFWW @Tumblewood howdy. just dipping in for the last few minutes. #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson @sduffy68 Here’s one step by step guide to getting started with blogger. #woodchat

@dividedlight @mamader It’s not that expensive so I figured I could take the riser block off if I didn’t like it. #woodchat

@MKatFWW @MansFineFurn madrone works better than the best cherry. it’s a wonderful wood. my favorite. too bad I live in CT. Got to ship it. #woodchat

@DJOfurnituremkr Have a great Thanksgiving everyone! See you next week. #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson @sduffy68 Sorry here’s the link: http://t.co/pbwsQYKI #woodchat

@MKatFWW @sleepydogwood @MansFineFurn That sounds nice. #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy Back at ya! RT @DJOfurnituremkr: Have a great Thanksgiving everyone! See you next week. #woodchat

@Tumblewood Hey all, thanks again for showing up tonight. I still need to work on another venue. But, my shop time is coming first right now #woodchat

We stuck to Twitter again tonight because we’re still having problems with Wompt.com. The best way to contribute to woodchat is Tweetchat.

@TomsWorkbench: @WoodworkGuy We’re on Twitter… #woodchat #woodchat

@Tumblewood: Are we gonna finally get @BobbyHagstrom on #woodchat tonight? The man is a organizational guru!

@TomsWorkbench: @NGBfurniture Go to http://t.co/hX0CgKTy and enter Woodchat in the box on top… baby! #woodchat

@Tumblewood: @TomsWorkbench How much wood would a #woodchat chat, if a #woodchat could chat wood.

@JimAAshley: T minus 15m until #woodchat

@TomsWorkbench: @Tumblewood I’m so confused! #woodchat

@Tumblewood: @JimAAshley gonna listen to some Kevin Pollack and pull a few nails while I wait #woodchat

@NGBfurniture: like this? #woodchat

@Tumblewood: @NGBfurniture JUST like that #woodchat

@TomsWorkbench: @NGBfurniture Exactly like that #woodchat

@NGBfurniture: hope somebody has notes on how to use a slot mortiser tonight! #woodchat

@TomsWorkbench: I’ve got all the stuff packed up for the Great American Teach In tomorrow… BOYEEEE #woodchat #woodchat

@TomsWorkbench: “Ahhhh, no need to put #woodchat in when I’m using Tweetchat.#woodchat”

@TheRealNeal: @TomsWorkbench It does auto-magically! #woodchat

@JimAAshley: Nice thing about tweetchat is no need to put in #woodchat, the #woodchat is put in for you. That’s cool they put in #woodchat 😉 #woodchat

@TomsWorkbench: So, you are saying that Tweetchat #woodchats all #woodchat posts with #woodchat? AMAZING! #woodchat

@UserOfWood: what up woodies? #woodchat

@BobbyHagstrom: RT @Tumblewood: @TomsWorkbench How much wood would a #woodchat chat, if a #woodchat could chat wood.

@theboisshop: Well, I had to ditch a work dinner early, but I managed to get home in time for #woodchat!

@JimAAshley: @TomsWorkbench Yep, it’s the #woodchattiest #woodchat that’ll #woodchatchatchat #woodchat

@sduffy68: Has the topic for tonight been officially determined? #woodchat

@TomsWorkbench: @JimAAshley #woodchat? #woodchat #woodchat, #woodchat #woodchat #woodchat! #WOODchat! #woodchat

@TomsWorkbench: @theboisshop No one at word could possibly appreciate your Bad Axe saw like us, Rob. #woodchat

@JimAAshley: @TomsWorkbench #woodchat #woodchat #woodchat #woodchat #woodchat #woodchat #woodchat #woodchat #woodchat #woodchat #WOODCHAT!! #woodchat

@JimAAshley: @TomsWorkbench and so on… ! #woodchat

@Treeworkz: Hi all – I’ve been chasing #woodchat around the interwebs, but I found it! #woodchat

@TomsWorkbench: Gosh, we are but MOMENTS away from the start of something big! #woodchat

@TomsWorkbench: @JimAAshley #Woodchat? #woodchat

@uppercutwood: I am here, just in a meeting. HUGS! #woodchat

@BobbyHagstrom: Chat chat…#woodchat

@WoodworkGuy: #woodchat Waiting with baited breath, or it beer breath…

@TomsWorkbench: Alright, everyone.. let’s kick the tires and light the fires! #woodchat

@50splinters: What am I missing on #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy: #woodchat Just getting started

@Treeworkz: what’s the topic? #woodchat

@uppercutwood: So, why aren’t people getting off their butts and getting in the shop? Too tired? Not sure how to spend their time? #woodchat

@uppercutwood: Or maybe you don’t want to deal with the mess? Or you’re scared of scewing something up? #woodchat

@Seanw78: Yuengling in hand, I’m here. Let’s do this #woodchat

@JimAAshley: @uppercutwood Spent some time in there earlier after work. #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy: Money could impact shop time… #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: “too many things to do, can’t decide which to do, so I do them all, ineffectively …need focus#woodchat”

@BobbyHagstrom: @uppercutwood If my shop’s messy or things will take too much time to set up, I tend to wait until I have a larger block of time #woodchat

@Seanw78: My shop time is often limited to what I can do after the kids go to bed before my own bedtime #woodchat

@Treeworkz: Too busy tweeting! #woodchat

@TomsWorkbench: @uppercutwood There’s a lot involved with inertia… if you are in the swing of things, you have no issues getting out there.. #woodchat

@sduffy68: Well, personally I had a break through two weeks ago thanks to this #woodchat group #woodchat

@Tumblewood: I’ll be at #woodchat in just a few minutes. Sylvia just got home.

@imaginer99: @Seanw78 Your lucky, not everyone can get that! #Woodchat

@uppercutwood: @JC_McGrath We are in twitter tonight due to an issue with the chatroom. try http://t.co/XjehUYxu #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @sduffy68 Please share your experience #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: “distractions. (read: woodchat, twitter, FB, blogs…)#woodchat”

@UserOfWood: i’ve been spending time on a SketchUp drawing for a new bench, i think that counts #woodchat

@TomsWorkbench: And, when you aren’t pushing a project along… wow, it’s tough to get out there! #woodchat

@JimAAshley: “@sduffy68 nice! let’s hear it#woodchat”

@JC_McGrath: @uppercutwood Got it thanks! #woodchat

@thewoodninja: My previous break was due to a mess in the shop. Took 2 days to clean it up but it was worth it. #woodchat

@TomsWorkbench: @MansFineFurn Oh, those take a lot of time for sure! #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @ToddInMontana You should join #woodchat http://t.co/RvI4yfOP

@imaginer99: @BobbyHagstrom part of my problem, don’t start it unless I can finish it. #Woodchat

@Treeworkz: Sometimes I get into the shop and my head’s not in the right space. I then end up fiddly round, cleaning, oiling, bits and pieces. #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @UserOfWood I think sketchup counts too. #woodchat

@sduffy68: After posting the question two weeks ago, I sort of realized that no one was going to kick my buttock into action #woodchat

@TomsWorkbench: @imaginer99 You really only do projects you can finish in one shop session? that’s pretty cool. #woodchat

@sduffy68: Unless of course I took action myself, so…. #woodchat

@DyamiPlotke: @uppercutwood I’m late to #woodchat because I’m in the shop!

@BobbyHagstrom: @imaginer99 I find that if I define “stopping points” to myself, I can cope with that and not delay until I have time for it all. #woodchat

@TomsWorkbench: @DyamiPlotke Oh, you bastard! #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy: Sometimes work has been too frustrating. I don’t want to make safety mistakes from lack of focus. #woodchat

@DJOfurnituremkr: I’m one of the lucky ones. The studio is a great place to be and it’s only a few steps away so I never really have a problem 🙂 #woodchat

@DyamiPlotke: RT @Seanw78 My shop time is often limited to what I can do after the kids go to bed before my own bedtime #woodchat -mine too

@Seanw78: I have chisels that need sharpened, skills that need improved, and multiple projects in the works, both in wood and in my head #woodchat

@imaginer99: @TomsWorkbench like to finish at least one setup per session! That would be nice though! #Woodchat

@NGBfurniture: i find my work flow suffered due to the move #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: One thing that helps: Break a project into a series of difficult, but achievable goals. Each day set out to complete one. #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy: Good goal, Tom. #woodchat

@kweinert: I’ve been trying to get my site/online shop set up so I can (hopefully) sell some pens/ornaments and be self-supporting #woodchat

@TomsWorkbench: @imaginer99 Nice… so you set up a ‘goal’ to get to, and finish when you get there… #woodchat

@sduffy68: That weekend I took the purpleheart and hard maple I had forseveral months and made the customary endgrain cutting board. #woodchat

@imaginer99: @BobbyHagstrom thanks! That’s going to help rethink my timing. #Woodchat

@uppercutwood: I think setting a realistic goal for your shop time is a good idea “i’m going to go out there and do x” #woodchat

@Treeworkz: We can’t all get into the shop everyday – but how do we make the most of each opportunity?? #woodchat

@JimAAshley: Be right back folks #woodchat

@Seanw78: @sduffy68 a rite of passage, that is #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy: I ‘m finally cleared to do stuff 6 wks after a hip replacement. #woodchat

@TomsWorkbench: @sduffy68 Nice project to tackle… #woodchat

@sduffy68: After I finished the cutting board, I went out and bought a few small pieces of red oak. #woodchat

@UserOfWood: @uppercutwood i agree i always have goals when i head to the shop #woodchat

@TomsWorkbench: @uppercutwood Matt – that’s the only way to fly… #woodchat

@TheRealNeal: Usually get home later than I’d like, and have many other things in the house hat need doing also. #woodchat

@HighRockWW: Hello #woodchat

@TomsWorkbench: @WoodworkGuy Well, welcome back to the shop! #woodchat

@BobbyHagstrom: @NGBfurniture Good opportunity to re-organize your layout, though! Perhaps that’ll be your project for now? #woodchat

@DyamiPlotke: RT @MansFineFurn 1 thing that helps: Break a project into difficult but achievable goals Each day set out 2 complete 1 #woodchat @MansFineFurn: @Treeworkz plan the work, work the plan. It may seem like a waste of shop time to spend planning, but then you work efficiently #woodchat

@sduffy68: “With oak and left over purpleheart I made my first box, with box joints and dovetails#woodchat”

@TomsWorkbench: @HighRockWW WORD! #woodchat

@DyamiPlotke: @uppercutwood goals are a great way to use time efficiently #woodchat

@TomsWorkbench: @sduffy68 Boxes are a great challenge.. very cool stuff. #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy: Thanks. I snuck in the charity rocking horse build over the last 2 weekends. Don’t tell my doc… #woodchat

@asliceofwood: heyheyhey. Hows everyone tonight. Whats the topic? #woodchat

@Treeworkz: I agree – it always works better if I have a clear plan. RT @MansFineFurn: @Treeworkz plan the work, work the plan. #woodchat

@NGBfurniture: @BobbyHagstrom hah it’s been a few months already! ive been working on new pieces, but still getting used to the new space #woodchat

@HighRockWW: @TomsWorkbench Yo! #woodchat

@sduffy68: The dovetails were handcut or maybe gnawed is more appropriate #woodchat

@TomsWorkbench: @WoodworkGuy Oh, I’m sure he’d understand! #woodchat

@JC_McGrath: @MansFineFurn that is a great approach that I have tried and put in place recently with great success. Just one process or item #woodchat

@imaginer99: @TomsWorkbench that’s kind of my minimum that I try to get done #Woodchat

@mamader: Evening all, first time on #woodchat #woodchat

@TomsWorkbench: @mamader Welcome! #woodchat

@Treeworkz: @mamader Hi #woodchat

@BobbyHagstrom: @MansFineFurn @Treeworkz planning my overall steps is worth the time investment for me. #woodchat

@JC_McGrath: @mamader Welcome a “board” pun intended #woodchat

@DyamiPlotke: RT @TomsWorkbench: @mamader Welcome! @UserOfWood: @mamader welcome #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy: Hello @mamader #woodchat

@Tumblewood: @BobbyHagstrom Yeah! You showed up. #woodchat

@sduffy68: I hope to put the finish on the box this weekend if time allows. #woodchat

@Seanw78: how much time do you normally get in your shop at a time? #woodchat

@TomsWorkbench: @JC_McGrath Arrr arrr arrr! #woodchat

@HighRockWW: #woodchat I can say that of I don’t have a specific goal when I get in the shop I tend to waste my time

@MansFineFurn: the number of goals (tasks) you set out to accomplish isn’t relevant, just have realistic, achievable ideas of which you can do #woodchat

@NGBfurniture: sooo what exactly is the topic for tonight fellas? #woodchat

@DyamiPlotke: @Seanw78 On avarage, about an hourish. #woodchat

@TomsWorkbench: @Seanw78 Not enough… but, I get the most out of the time out there. #woodchat

@UserOfWood: @Seanw78 mostly weekends for me #woodchat

@asliceofwood: I try to make a goal….but it never happens the way I want it. Things always come up. #woodchat

@Treeworkz: SMART goals? Specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, timed. I feel like I’m at work. #woodchat

@JC_McGrath: @MansFineFurn It works #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy: I agree @HighRockWW. Otherwise I start puttering around and not accomplishing much. #woodchat

@BobbyHagstrom: @tumblewood I just checked, and I’m here too! #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: @BobbyHagstrom me too, helps prevent the “hmm what should I do now?” moments #woodchat

@Tumblewood: That I hadn’t heard, but since @BobbyHagstrom is in, how about workflow, or organization? #woodchat

@Tooltutor: #woodchat whats the topic tonight?

@HighRockWW: @WoodworkGuy exactly! #woodchat

@BobbyHagstrom: I find that sometimes you have to kind of force the shop time, or small tasks around the house fill in the gaps. #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: “@Treeworkz You nailed it. Learned it years ago in the suit world, works even better when you’re the boss and the worker bee#woodchat”

@asliceofwood: @BobbyHagstrom and there is always stuff at the house to do #woodchat

@Tumblewood: I’m out here fairly regularly for 2 plus hours a night , this time of year. #woodchat

@TomsWorkbench: @BobbyHagstrom You’ll find yourself cleaning your baseboards with a Q-tip #woodchat

@sduffy68: @BobbyHagstrom No doubt about that!!! #woodchat

@BobbyHagstrom: @Tumblewood Yep!…! #woodchat

@Treeworkz: I have a white board to list what needs doing. If not in the head space to work on the ‘big’ project, I’m still productive. #woodchat

@HighRockWW: @BobbyHagstrom I know what you mean, so when you only have small increments of time u make the most out of it #woodchat

@Tumblewood: I’ve got one more board to clean then start laying out parts!! #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy: Fortunately, I have a bunch of holiday gifts I want to make/give this year. So shop time will be focused the next few weeks. #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: “@JC_McGrath what works? missed the thread#woodchat”

@Torch02: @Treeworkz I’ve found it helpful to actually write down those SMART goals as well. Easier to be self-accountable w/ a list #woodchat

@HighRockWW: @Tumblewood that’s great Vic! #woodchat

@DyamiPlotke: @Tumblewood Go get ’em, Vic! #woodchat

@Tumblewood: I’m more of a work one project at time in the shop. I always have a lot of balls in the air across the board, though. #woodchat

@ebeckham29: looking foward to the #woodchat transcript, wish I coulda made it

@TomsWorkbench: @WoodworkGuy The holiday gift thing is a definite motivator #woodchat

@theboisshop: I put a chalk board on the wall of my shop – great way to keep track of my tasks, hours, and goals. #woodchat

@lucaspeters: Am I still in time for #woodchat ? #woodchat

@BobbyHagstrom: @HighRockWW That’s why it’s important to have the shop ready, so you don’t have to set up so much at the beginning of a session. #woodchat

@Tumblewood: Going to Flax seed oil my Benchcrafted wheels. Sweet look #woodchat

@DyamiPlotke: @TomsWorkbench I wish I only had one project underway at once. Definite Woodworking ADD here. #woodchat

@JimAAshley: @theboisshop like that idea #woodchat

@JC_McGrath: @MansFineFurn Your comment on the number or tasksof time, just that you set those incremental goals to maintain progress. #woodchat

@sduffy68: What gift projects do you all have planned? #woodchat

@BobbyHagstrom: @ebeckham29 We’re still chatting! #woodchat

@TomsWorkbench: “@theboisshop Chalkboard? Dude you are OLD SCHOOL!#woodchat”

@DyamiPlotke: @lucaspeters Yep. Welcome. #woodchat

@HighRockWW: “@theboisshop: I put a chalk board on the wall of my shop – great way to keep track of my tasks, hours, and goals. #woodchat” > mine too – great if you have one #woodchat

@MKatFWW: @JimAAshley I love having it. Makes sharpening very easy and convenient. #woodchat

@TomsWorkbench: @MKatFWW I’ve had success with the DMT xtra fine ones.. cut like a champ. #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: while we’re on sharpening: dumpster dive at your local countertop fab shop, they toss lots of good flat stone (sink cutouts etc) #woodchat

@BobbyHagstrom: RT @HighRockWW: @TomsWorkbench @treeworkz I need a dedicated sharpening station, I have to set up each time #woodchat

@HighRockWW: @Tumblewood @mkatfww Vic, I love your sharpening station, really cool. #woodchat

@MKatFWW: @Treeworkz If not sink, just bring in a tub or set up some kind of cooler with a spigot. #woodchat

@Tumblewood: “@WoodworkGuy http://t.co/hmQSUI1G #woodchat#woodchat”

@HighRockWW: @TomsWorkbench exactly my problem! #woodchat

@MKatFWW: @TomsWorkbench You get a high polish from those? = to 8000 grit stones? #woodchat

@Tumblewood: @HighRockWW Thanks, Chris #woodchat

@mamader: For those who have wet stones in an unheated garage, do you bring them inside for the winter? #woodchat

@imaginer99: @MansFineFurn That’s how I have mine! The owner didn’t care, he even put it in my van for me! #Woodchat

@TheRealNeal: Mine’s in the laundry room. Not bad, but could be better. At least I have a sink 🙂 #woodchat

@MKatFWW: I do know english, just can’t type it that well right now. #woodchat

@BobbyHagstrom: @MansFineFurn Awesome idea; didn’t think of that…need a 24”x24” flat granite slab for sharpening… #woodchat

@Tumblewood: @mamader I would, Mike #woodchat

@TomsWorkbench: @MKatFWW High enough… Even with the Tormek, I keep the xtra fine by the bench for touchups #woodchat

@MKatFWW: The most important thing is to have it always at the ready. That way there’s no excuse not to sharpen. #woodchat

@Tumblewood: @TomsWorkbench You’ve got a Tormek!?!? You bitch!! #woodchat

@JC_McGrath: @Tumblewood Vic’s sharpening station is an inspiration for real! #woodchat

@MKatFWW: @TomsWorkbench Cool. I’ll have to check some out the next time I see them. #woodchat

@HighRockWW: @MKatFWW #woodchat goes very fast! It’s speed reading and typing!

@bltww: woot… just joining the fun #woodchat

@sduffy68: @Tumblewood Vic, that sharpening station is the bomb. Excellent!!! #woodchat

@Tumblewood: “@JC_McGrath Aw, you’re bein’ sweet, Jon. shucks#woodchat”

@TomsWorkbench: @Tumblewood Come to my shop, Vic. We’ll sharpen shit there.. #woodchat

@sduffy68: @bltww welcome to the show! #woodchat

@Tumblewood: @bltww Yo! Erik! #woodchat

@HighRockWW: @bltww welcome! #woodchat

@JimAAshley: @bltww cool, welcome! #woodchat

@JinkerPlex: Just got here, what’d I miss? Can we start over? #woodchat

@Seanw78: Agree! “Tumblewood @TomsWorkbench You’ve got a Tormek!?!? You bitch!!” #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy: I’m still on it myself . Have problems w/ vowel movement RT @MKatFWW: I do know english, just can’t type it that well right now. #woodchat

@BobbyHagstrom: Sometimes I build stuff for friends, which elevates my motivation to be in the shop, because I can’t wait to give it to them. #woodchat

@Tumblewood: @TomsWorkbench I’m more comfy in mine..I’ll buy the beer #woodchat

@sduffy68: @JinkerPlex good evening #woodchat

@TomsWorkbench: @bltww Hey, Eric! #woodchat

@Seanw78: @JinkerPlex in a word, no. #woodchat

@bltww: @JinkerPlex you just missed me just getting here #woodchat

@BobbyHagstrom: RT @Tumblewood: @TomsWorkbench You’ve got a Tormek!?!? You bitch!! #woodchat

@TomsWorkbench: @JinkerPlex Aaron! WORD! #woodchat

@HighRockWW: @JinkerPlex only for you Aaron! #woodchat glad you made it.

@Tumblewood: @JinkerPlex Hey, Aaron..how’s fatherhood treatin’ ya? #woodchat

@BobbyHagstrom: @Tumblewood hehe… #woodchat

@TomsWorkbench: @Tumblewood OK, Vic. You win. #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: Deadlines help me get stuff done #woodchat

@DyamiPlotke: Uber laptop connectivity failure. To tweetdeck on the phone. I’ll #woodchat one way or another!

@JinkerPlex: @bltww Sweet, Erik. People are going to think it’s a Clark Kent/Superman thing. #woodchat

@thewoodninja: Is sharpening the topic for tonight? #woodchat

@DyamiPlotke: @bltww @JinkerPlex welcome to the party #woodchat

@MKatFWW: I prefer sandpaper and granite for grinding primary bevels. Never got used to hollow grinds. #woodchat

@Tumblewood: @TomsWorkbench I always win, cause I’m a horrible loser! #woodchat

@TomsWorkbench: @thewoodninja Getting there in a hurry. #woodchat

@bltww: I’m getting 2x 220V@30A 2x 220V@20A and 2x 110@20A circuits installed this weekend. #woodchat

@Seanw78: @thewoodninja no, just another tangent. Motivation for shop time is the subject at hand. #woodchat

@TheRealNeal: @JinkerPlex @bltww Those glasses make you look totally different! #woodchat

@JinkerPlex: @Tumblewood I’ve been away on biz for 3 days. Hotel was nice and quiet, got lots of catch-up sleep. Kiss that goodbye! Ha! #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: “@thewoodninja no. it’s how to be productive in the shop or something like that (they’re all procrastinating with sharpening) #woodchat”

@JC_McGrath: @thewoodninja Brother, there are so many topics flying by, strap on dude, this thing is FLYING #woodchat

@Tumblewood: @thewoodninja we’ve covered tracking hours, sharpening, and there was one more thing. anyone? #woodchat

@Treeworkz: @thewoodninja bit of everything tonight. #woodchat

@TomsWorkbench: The strop wheel on the Tormek is awesome for touching up edges during a chisel session. #woodchat

@Tumblewood: @bltww nIce #woodchat

@Seanw78: @bltww Nice. That should get the juice(s) flowing #badpun #woodchat

@DyamiPlotke: I’m reorganizing the shop now. How many have dedicated sharpening stations permanently setup? #woodchat

@TomsWorkbench: About ten seconds with the hone going and BANG, I’m back to the bench. #woodchat

@Tumblewood: @TomsWorkbench I just rehit the chisel with my 8000 and then the 12000 japanese stone #woodchat

@JimAAshley: @Tumblewood @thewoodninja some of everything. motivation to get into shop at the beginning. #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: @MKatFWW I like the hollow grind, don’t need a bevel jig after hollowing it seats itself #woodchat

@MKatFWW: re: shop productivity. Don’t try to renovate a 100 yr. old house. It eats into my shop time every weekend. I work mostly at night. #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy: OK, Gov. Perry… RT @Tumblewood: @thewoodninja we’ve covered tracking hours, sharpening, and there was one more thing. anyone? #woodchat

@Treeworkz: Soon RT @DyamiPlotke: Im reorganizing the shop now. How many have dedicated sharpening stations permanently setup? #woodchat

@UserOfWood: @DyamiPlotke i do it’s nice #woodchat

@TomsWorkbench: @DyamiPlotke I’m semi-permanent. #woodchat

@JC_McGrath: @DyamiPlotke Not me:( but I will grow up and be like Vic one day #woodchat

@JinkerPlex: @DyamiPlotke Don’t have one, but I really need a dedicated area. Have you seen the recent FWW article? #woodchat

@lucaspeters: @bltww Just dropped in a 220 @30amp last weekend. Installed a heater, finally! #woodchat

@wilburpan: @DyamiPlotke I do. It was the first thing I built. #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: @MKatFWW amen to that #woodchat

@thewoodninja: A paying client is always good motivation for me #woodchat

@Tumblewood: “@Treeworkz Me#woodchat”

@sduffy68: Seeing we reached full disfunction on the original topic… Does anyone have the 3-1/4HP Triton Router, if so comments #woodchat

@imaginer99: Not me, but mine only takes about 5 minutes to setup. #Woodchat

@bltww: ya, definitely having a dedicated sharpening station in the new shop #woodchat

@MKatFWW: @MansFineFurn That’s nice, but I jig up for primary bevels and its the same setup for secondary, too. #woodchat

@wilburpan: Am I doing this #woodchat thing right? Just drop in the #woodchat hashtag to my tweets?

@TomsWorkbench: @lucaspeters And, it’s about to get COLD in Des Moines, right? #woodchat

@Tumblewood: @lucaspeters How’s that workin? good, yea? I had the same one in my little garage shop I had at the last house #woodchat

@bltww: @lucaspeters I live in Oakland, CA.. no heater required. #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy: +1 on dedicated sharpening station #woodchat

@Kinniska: +1 RT @BobbyHagstrom Sometimes I build for friends, which elevates my motivation to be in shop, bc I can’t wait to give it to them #woodchat

@MKatFWW: I also get in some shop time at work if I get there early enough. #woodchat

@DyamiPlotke: @MKatFWW as a teenager I gutted & rebuilt my dad’s 100 yr old colonial. I know what a (great) time sink it is. #woodchat

@uppercutwood: OK I can finally join the party. Sorry about that. Wilbur, it’s easier if you go to http://t.co/XjehUYxu #woodchat

@Tumblewood: @wilburpan if you follow http://t.co/mfDUtbN4 you can just type and not use a hashtag #woodchat

@Treeworkz: yep – love it to death! RT @sduffy68: Does anyone have the 3-1/4HP Triton Router, if so comments #woodchat

@Black_SheepWW: I’ve been forgetting the # for #woodchat

@TomsWorkbench: @bltww Occupy Eric’s shop! #woodchat

@Tooltutor: @MKatFWW #woodchat in fact, any renovation eats into my shop time

@uppercutwood: You can practice a lot of skills and do fine work with small projects like boxes. Explore new woods, joinery, finishes. #woodchat

@HighRockWW: @wilburpan yep #woodchat

@lucaspeters: @TomsWorkbench Yes, sir. Though it’s been pretty balmy here the last few days. Haven’t been able to test it. #woodchat

@DyamiPlotke: @JinkerPlex no,but I’m SO behind in my magazine reading. #woodchat

@Tumblewood: @Treeworkz Rob? Isn’t that what you have? #woodchat

@MKatFWW: @Tooltutor It is a time killer. I’m almost done with the kitchen. #woodchat

@sduffy68: @Treeworkz am i suppose to read anything into the death comment? #woodchat

@DyamiPlotke: @wilburpan that’s it, Wilbur! #woodchat

@TomsWorkbench: @lucaspeters Consider it your stay of execution! 😛 #woodchat

@Tumblewood: @lucaspeters Mine kept up in a really leaky, but insulated garage. #woodchat

@bltww: @TomsWorkbench Haha… please do. I’ve got a guest room if anyone’s visiting the area. #woodchat

@wilburpan: “OK, I’m on the TweetChat thing. Boy are tweets scrolling by fast.#woodchat”

@lucaspeters: @Tumblewood I’ve only just ran it a bit; it’s only been down to about 50° in the shop, so not a good test. #woodchat

@thewoodninja: @uppercutwood Good point. A beautiful new piece of wood is always great motivation to get into the shop! #woodchat

@imaginer99: @uppercutwood Good point, just got my new scrapers in and only had 30 minutes. So I went to go play for a little! #Woodchat

@DyamiPlotke: @MKatFWW shop time and a jointer bigger than my shop! 😉 #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @Tumblewood are you hanging out? #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: @uppercutwood how do you keep focused on accomplishing if you are undertaking multiple small projects? #woodchat

@MKatFWW: When I do get time in the shop I make sure i have a definitive project to complete: mill the drawer parts or cut dts for a drawer. #woodchat

@lucaspeters: @Tumblewood That’s good to hear. I’ve heard good things about it. For the price, I have high hopes. #woodchat

@HighRockWW: @wilburpan it goes very fast! #woodchat

@TomsWorkbench: @bltww Sweet! West side! #woodchat

@Treeworkz: @sduffy68 No – just my enduring love for it! #woodchat

@pickettfurnitur: “i’m late. what’s the topic(s)?#woodchat”

@MKatFWW: @DyamiPlotke Yes, a 16 in. SCMI jointer is one of the benefits of my job! #woodchat

@Tumblewood: @lucaspeters I’ve always kept my shops above 45*, just for the glues and other chemicals #woodchat

@uppercutwood: Things you can do with little time: sweep, sharpen, practive a dovetail, make a to do list, sketch a new design #woodchat

@BobbyHagstrom: Spending more time in the design phase can help you be more excited for your customer to see your work. #woodchat

@wilburpan: Any way to get to posts that have scrolled off the screen? #woodchat

@Tumblewood: “@uppercutwood no..just on TweetChat#woodchat”

@thewoodninja: I tend to keep a notebook with step by step tasks as I’m working on a project. I check them off as I complete them. #woodchat

@HighRockWW: RT @MKatFWW: When I do get time in the shop I make sure i have a definitive project to complete: mill the drawer parts or cut dts for a drawer. #woodchat

@TomsWorkbench: @lucaspeters Hey, by the way, Lucas – thanks to @wood_magazine for their support of #woodchat

@sduffy68: @Treeworkz Does the power lockout feature create major issues with under the table adjustments and powering on and off? #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy: Thought size only mattered to women… RT @DyamiPlotke: @MKatFWW shop time and a jointer bigger than my shop! 😉 #woodchat

@MKatFWW: When i have little time I just clean my shop. Or sort through the wood stack and dream. #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @Tumblewood starting one, can I see your handsome face. #gross #woodchat

@Tumblewood: @wilburpan I dont think so #woodchat

@imaginer99: @wilburpan I just wait for the transcripts! #Woodchat

@Tumblewood: @uppercutwood sure, I’ll pop over #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @lucaspeters yes Lucas, thank you #woodchat

@MKatFWW: @WoodworkGuy It matters to ww’kers, too! at least when it comes to iron. #woodchat

@wilburpan: @MKatFWW You may not remember, but you showed my son how to use your shoulder plane at the LN event in NJ last summer. #woodchat

@lucaspeters: @TomsWorkbench Well, we like wood, and we like chatting. Like chocolate and peanut butter. #woodchat

@Treeworkz: @sduffy68 – No just position it where you can reach it. Still easier than lifting out. #woodchat

@woodshaver101: “how’s it going guys#woodchat”

@wilburpan: “@MKatFWW I posted a picture of that on my blog.#woodchat”

@MKatFWW: @wilburpan I do remember that. Does he still have an interest? #woodchat

@Tumblewood: @uppercutwood I don’t see one yet..just checked your G+ page #woodchat

@HighRockWW: #woodchat I try and keep out the tools I need for a project so there is less setup time when I get in the shop #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy: ROFLMAO! long, sharp & flat RT @MKatFWW: @WoodworkGuy It matters to ww’kers, too! at least when it comes to iron. #woodchat

@JC_McGrath: @woodshaver101 Howdy #woodchat

@TomsWorkbench: Ya know, someone at #WIA was giving me the “Bigger saw is better” line. But, I just love my contractor saw so much. #woodchat

@theboisshop: @sduffy68 I have the Triton too. The power lockout becomes second nature. And nice piece of mind too – love that router. #woodchat

@DyamiPlotke: @MKatFWW lucky. Wholesale pricing on polyisocyanurate is my fringe benefit. I’m about to take full advantage of it. #woodchat

@lucaspeters: @uppercutwood NP. Let us know how we can help. #woodchat

@wilburpan: @MKatFWW He’s all over the Pinewood Derby thing. He’s figured out the difference between rasps and files. #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @Tumblewood should be there now. #woodchat

@LaMacchiaDesign: What’s up everyone? I’m in the shop tonight so I missing most of the chat. I wanted to stop by and say hello though. #woodchat

@Tumblewood: @theboisshop good DC? #woodchat? I need better router DC…HATE DUST!!

@MKatFWW: @wilburpan It’s cool when someone’s kid hangs out at LN show. My son loves to be in the shop. #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: @HighRockWW I assume you mean power tools? Hand tools tend to pile up on the bench if I don’t put them away when I’m done with em #woodchat

@uppercutwood: I just got the Bosch MRC23EVSK great router so far. Love the power button on the handles. Thanks @DyamiPlotke #woodchat

@MKatFWW: @DyamiPlotke I’m sure that’s great, but I don’t know what it is! #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @lucaspeters Maybe you can build a chatroom for us? #woodchat

@Tumblewood: “@uppercutwood Dude..are you gonna start a chat? I can’t keep track of both, I’m an old fart#woodchat”

@Black_SheepWW: “Have to say, I do miss my contractor saw. It has severed me well over the years. #woodchat”

@HighRockWW: @theboisshop @sduffy68 is that the one woodcraft has on sale right now? #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @Tumblewood does your router have a vac attachment or can you use rockler’s whirlwind? #woodchat

@JinkerPlex: Gotta run guys. Have a happy #woodchat

@JimAAshley: @LaMacchiaDesign welcome! #woodchat

@DyamiPlotke: @theboisshop how’s the dust collection on the Triton? #woodchat

@Treeworkz: @LaMacchiaDesign Glad you did. #woodchat

@MKatFWW: @wilburpan Nice. Pinewood derby is fun. #woodchat

@Seanw78: @uppercutwood That one’s on my shopping list for sure #woodchat

@sduffy68: @theboisshop @Treeworkz Looks like I’ll need to order my new Triton sometime this week then. Thanks for the feedback!!! #woodchat

@TomsWorkbench: @DyamiPlotke Hey, get some sleep! That baby girls needs a wide awake daddy! #woodchat

@sduffy68: @HighRockWW Yuppers!!! #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: Severed…nice one. RT @Black_SheepWW: Have to say, I do miss my contractor saw. It has severed me well over the years. #woodchat

@Seanw78: @JinkerPlex Later, Aaron. go take care of that wonderful kid of yours #woodchat

@JimAAshley: @JinkerPlex take it easy! #woodchat

@uppercutwood: There will be a standard woodchat transcript again #woodchat

@mamader: I love my contractor saw too. Well tuned, they can perform very well for a very long time. #woodchat

@Treeworkz: OUCH! RT @Black_SheepWW: Have to say, I do miss my contractor saw. It has severed me well over the years. #woodchat

@MKatFWW: I’m out. Got to get some sleep. #woodchat

@lucaspeters: @uppercutwood Weren’t you playing with one on your site? Not robust enough? Or was it too hard to migrate folks over? #woodchat

@woodshaver101: @Black_SheepWW that new saw you have will make you happier #woodchat

@HighRockWW: @MansFineFurn I mean that I try and set up before I leave for the next time #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy: LOVE my Rockler Vortex! RT @uppercutwood: @Tumblewood does your router have a vac attachment or can you use rockler’s whirlwind? #woodchat

@BobbyHagstrom: @Black_SheepWW The only thing I didn’t like about the SawStop was getting it off the pickup truck bed…. #woodchat

@uppercutwood: So why can’t people get off their butt and start working. Does it look like too much work? #woodchat

@woodshaver101: @Black_SheepWW my delta is 3 hp,not to bad,5 hp is to much #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy: Take care Tom. Good luck tomorrow. #woodchat

@JimAAshley: @TomsWorkbench Take it easy Tom! Good luck. #woodchat

@sduffy68: @TomsWorkbench Later Tom good luck with the knuckleheads tomorrow!!! #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: @uppercutwood I think it was too much work to think about that question, seems to have drifted a bit in your absence. #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @TomsWorkbench Goodnight sweet prince #woodchat

@HighRockWW: @sduffy68 I may have to stop by and check it out this weekend. #woodchat

@weilworks26: came in ~30 min after start of #woodchat tonight. took me 20 mins just to get caught up! dang guys you’ll talk fast!

@woodshaver101: @pickettfurnitur a few screws and you can look right at it #woodchat

@BobbyHagstrom: @uppercutwood There must be an underlying “dread” involved, perhaps a messy shop, or people think there’s too many things to do? #woodchat

@HighRockWW: “@weilworks26: came in ~30 min after start of #woodchat tonight. took me 20 mins just to get caught up! dang guys you’ll talk fast!” @BobbyHagstrom: @HighRockWW @weilworks26 Yep yep!! #woodchat

@sduffy68: @HighRockWW sale ends the 23rd #woodchat

@wilburpan: @weilworks26 Type fast is more like it. :@) #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: RT @BobbyHagstrom: @uppercutwood There must be an underlying “dread”… too many things to do? feeling overwhelmed and avoiding #woodchat

@woodshaver101: what clamps do you guys prefer #woodchat

@BobbyHagstrom: If you find yourself making excuses for not going in the shop, ask yourself if it’s something you can solve. #woodchat

@Black_SheepWW: @uppercutwood I’m guilty, I come home from work and watch tv. Been working late lately.#woodchat

@HighRockWW: @Tumblewood have fun Vic! #woodchat

@Tooltutor: @BobbyHagstrom @uppercutwood #woodchat well articulated. “dread” of another unfinished project holds me back too often

@sduffy68: @woodshaver101 Jet Parallels Rock!!! #woodchat

@JimAAshley: @Tumblewood Have a good one! #woodchat

@uppercutwood: RT @BobbyHagstrom: If you find yourself making excuses for not going in the shop, ask yourself if its something you can solve. #woodchat

@woodshaver101: @Black_SheepWW I’m self employed,I work all hours and all days #woodchat

@theboisshop: There is one point in every project where I have to “power through” – usually a tedious or challenging part. #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy: Which ever I can reach… Like Bessey F’s Need to try Jet though. RT @woodshaver101: what clamps do you guys prefer #woodchat

@wilburpan: @woodshaver101 Not a real popular choice, but Wetzler clamps rock. http://t.co/iYDVIudN #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @Tooltutor what about dread of failing, or dread of the “not so fun parts” like damnit I have to go sand. #woodchat

@Tooltutor: #woodchat break down the project into smaller discrete tasks to help move things forward

@sduffy68: Hope everyone has a great remainder of the week and if I don’t make it next week happy thanksgiving!!! #woodchat

@woodshaver101: @sduffy68 I like the jorgensone cabinet master similar to bessys #woodchat

@uppercutwood: “@bltww See you later Eric #woodchat”

@woodshaver101: @sduffy68 take care and a good holiday to #woodchat

@imaginer99: @uppercutwood Definitely when it comes time for finishing, I like shavings, not chemicals. #Woodchat

@Tooltutor: @uppercutwood #woodchat definitely. The not fun part definitely stalls progress

@JimAAshley: Have a good night folks! take care. #woodchat

@uppercutwood: I like water. RT @imaginer99: @uppercutwood Definitely when it comes time for finishing, I like shavings, not chemicals. #woodchat

@Treeworkz: Later, everyone. Thanks for the ride. #woodchat

@wilburpan: I think a lot of guys are leaving now so they can go watch “Revenge”. :@) #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy: Off to make the world safe for my kegerator! Take care all and have a great Thanksgiving! #woodchat

@HighRockWW: #woodchat time for me to call it a night guys, it’s been fun!

@Wood_Jedi: “@wilburpan LOL you might be onto something#woodchat”

@Tooltutor: #woodchat gotta feed the preggo. Catch y’all next week. Hope u get in some shop time before then. Me included.

@imaginer99: @uppercutwood That’s my next thing I want to learn about. I like the cherry table finish you just put on. #Woodchat

@Black_SheepWW: Gotta go, my boss just text me, hope I don’t have to go back to work. #woodchat

@BobbyHagstrom: @bltww Me too…the 3hp version of the SawStop has plenty of power. #woodchat

@lucaspeters: Gotta check out, guys. Later! #woodchat

@woodshaver101: @Black_SheepWW have a good one,take care #woodchat

@Wood_Jedi: @lucaspeters have a good night #woodchat

@imaginer99: @BobbyHagstrom Is there ever a time when you need 5hp? I have 3 and never once had an issue. #Woodchat

@uppercutwood: @imaginer99 General Finishes Water Based Dye Stain is so awesome. Bought tons of it today. #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @lucaspeters See you later Lucas #woodchat

@BobbyHagstrom: I like Rockler’s Sam Maloof finish. Takes a number of coats to get it right, but it’s totally worth it. #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: @uppercutwood what color was that one you used on the birch, cherry? #woodchat

@woodshaver101: good night ,have a great thanks giving all #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @BobbyHagstrom I tried it, and hated it. I was brushing and I prefer to spray or use a wiping varnish. #woodchat

@Wood_Jedi: Hey guys when spraying your Lacquer finishes do you sand between coats or before the final coat? #woodchat

@BobbyHagstrom: @imaginer99 I don’t think so, if someone does, either they’re cutting something way too dense, or the blade is dull! #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @Wood_Jedi I usually sand after the first coat and then only lightly sand with high grit to remove any nibs. #woodchat

@woodshaver101: @Wood_Jedi 320 gritt between every one and tack cloth to,will get a nice look #woodchat

@BobbyHagstrom: @uppercutwood I still like to use foam brushes; haven’t bought an HVLP yet. #woodchat

@imaginer99: @BobbyHagstrom Thanks #Woodchat

@uppercutwood: @uppercutwood but I try to avoid lacquer and go with water based stuff. Lacquer gives me a hangover #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: @uppercutwood have you tried Resisthane waterborne ‘pre-cat’ lacquer? #woodchat

@Wood_Jedi: @woodshaver101 I figured as much, just wanted to make sure i wasnt doing to much unneccessary work… #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @Wood_Jedi if the finish is smooth, don’t bother sanding at all #woodchat

@wilburpan: @BobbyHagstrom Back in the 1940s-50s table saws came with 1HP motors, and they had to cut the same wood that we do today. #woodchat

@Wood_Jedi: Im using CAB acrylic for the first time.. Not what i usually use in a lacquer. just thought id try it out.. #woodchat

@Wood_Jedi: @uppercutwood Its sprays very nicely thats why i was asking if i should sand between coats.. but its good to get other opinions #woodchat

@imaginer99: Thanks for woodchat everyone! Is it on for next week? #Woodchat

@uppercutwood: Woodchat is officially over for tonight I’ll get working on the transcript. #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: Bye guys and/or gals thanks for the chat #woodchat

@statweestics: #woodchat is getting popular, +900% the last hour : http://t.co/Edzb2mFG

@Tumblewood: @benjamenjohnson some nice gems. #woodchat The transcript will be posted soon.

@Black_SheepWW: Donna pointed out l to me that I misspelled some words on #woodchat last night. That’s what I get for trying to keep up on an iPad.

@imaginer99: @Black_SheepWW Happened to me last week, I now read before sending. #Woodchat

@MKatFWW: #woodchat was fun last night, but a blur. It’s a bit tough to keep 4-5 conversations at once, all while watching another 10 or so.

@ebeckham29: Is the #Woodchat transcripts out yet? I couldn’t stay online last night and missed everything. It was worth it though

@uppercutwood: Running late on posting the #woodchat transcript, sorry about that. Will try to get it done tonight.

46 Woodworkers Chat About Tools: Woodchat Transcript November 9, 2011

Another great night for #woodchat with 46 woodworkers contributing and sharing their knowledge about great places to get tools and how to care for them. A lot of focus on buying used hand tools but not excluding bigger items like a router table or a table saw.

Tonight’s topic was chosen by the #woodchat participants through a poll. Next week’s topic will likely be “Getting Started and Motivated.” If you want a different topic covered, make sure to vote in the poll.

@uppercutwood: Welcome to #woodchat for 11/9/2011. Tonight’s topic is acquiring and caring for tools. #woodchat

@asliceofwood: I feel like i’m at AA. #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy: Great @mitwoodworks. And you? #woodchat

@uppercutwood: There are some interesting ways to acquire tools, who would like to share their idea or question? #woodchat

@imaginer99: @DJOfurnituremkr Great taste! #woodchat

@dividedlight: @DJOfurnituremkr I really take care of my tools and I get them fixed when they break. #woodchat

@DJOfurnituremkr: @asliceofwood Add to that keeping you blade edges sharp. #woodchat

@TheRealNeal: Port City Monumental IPA here. Good stuff.#woodchat

@WoodworkGuy: I have always liked combing flea markets for other tools #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: Neighbors moving away RT @uppercutwood: … interesting ways to acquire tools, who would like to share their idea or question? #woodchat

@asliceofwood: you can get some great finds at auctions and yard sales/flea markets #woodchat

@thewoodninja: @uppercutwood Don’t ever underestimate the power of Craigslist when starting out, especially for power tools #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: and ebay#woodchat

@uppercutwood: There are lots of people who get GAS – Gear Acquisition Syndrome, you see that with woodworkers, fisherman, any hobby #woodchat

@uppercutwood: One way is to start with a basic set, and then only buy tools when you can’t make progress on a project without a given tool #woodchat

@dividedlight: @uppercutwood I’ve purchase a few tools used. That’s always an adventure. #woodchat

@sduffy68: Just acquired a Stanley No. 6C for $20.00. Needed cleaned a bit but otherwise seemed in good condition. #woodchat

@sleepydogwood: #woodchat hello guys whats the topic tonight

@WoodworkGuy: Yard/estate sales can be good. But sometimes they are really proud of their stuff #woodchat

@DJOfurnituremkr: My favorite shop: http://t.co/ZAtsAsEg #woodchat

@JinkerPlex: @uppercutwood I’d be curious if anyone has experience with the popular tool pushers – Patrick Leach or Hyperkitten, etc #woodchat

@sduffy68: Should I sand the sole and the sides?#woodchat

@uppercutwood: Good tips are to buy on craigslist, ebay, flea markets, etc. #woodchat

@UserOfWood: @MansFineFurn i’ve been burned a few time on ebay. even when i ask all the right questions. #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @sleepydogwood acquiring and caring for the right tools #woodchat

@mitwoodworks: Buy quality the first time, everytime #woodchat

@sharpendwood: Hey everyone#woodchat

@MansFineFurn: I get my tools from shannon when he clans his shop #woodchat

@sduffy68: I actually found this plane in the pawn shop. #woodchat

@asliceofwood: talk people down when dealing on craigslist. most just want the tool gone #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson: @DJOfurnituremkr I’ve found that I sharpen my chisels more often since I made a jig for setting up the distance on my honing guide #woodchat

@imaginer99: @uppercutwood I agree on only buying what you need, but the prob i run into is which brand? #woodchat

@thewoodninja: @uppercutwood I did that yesterday. Finally bought 4 50” parallel clamps after 12 yrs of woodworking because I had no other option #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @JinkerPlex Yes I have bought from http://t.co/jJgmly8N Patrick Leach and he’s been great. Online and at WIA. #woodchat

@ebeckham29: Missing #woodchat for this….

@DJOfurnituremkr: I used to be a power to junkie. View link after #woodchat: http://t.co/nNwBjipd #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @thewoodninja I hope you bought the @jettools clamps #woodchat

@sleepydogwood: Cool, something I been doing all summer #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: @UserOfWood yeah, you need to be a saavy shopper sometimes with ebay, but more often, a decent deal with a little cleanup. #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson: I’ve had rotten luck at garage and estate sales. All I ever find are candy dished and kids clothes #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @imaginer99 the brand depends on the tool, some companies are better at different things #woodchat

@asliceofwood: sales at local tool stores and the up coming BLACK FRIDAY! great deals #woodchat

@JinkerPlex: I was overwhelmed at Leach’s WIA booth. So many things, and I know so littel about selecting good stuff. #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy: I’ve been getting more into hand tools in the last yr. Like the stronger sense of “hands-on” #woodchat

@TheRealNeal: I’ve had to bow out of many ebay auctions when the prices started getting too high. #woodchat

@thewoodninja: @uppercutwood Had to go with 2 jorgensen & Bessey as I only have local access to Lowe’s & Home Depot #woodchat

@dividedlight: @thewoodninja I purchased a rockwell lathe on craigslist. A new motor and some belts and it’s as good as new.#woodchat

@UserOfWood: @benjamenjohnson same here, at least out west where i’m at. it seems there much more back east. #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @benjamenjohnson Garage sales are hit and miss #woodchat

@asliceofwood: @TheRealNeal prices can sky rocket quick on ebay #woodchat

@HighRockWW: Hey #woodchat how is everyone doing tonight!

@MansFineFurn: For stanley planes Leach’s Blood and Gore page is a great resource for research#woodchat

@uppercutwood: @HighRockWW Welcome! #woodchat

@csp2430: Decide on the job, then make sure you have the tools you need. Not other way round. #woodchat #woodchat

@JinkerPlex: @HighRockWW Good evening, Chris! #woodchat

@Torch02: @JinkerPlex With Patrick, you really need to know what you want. He’s not a “browsing” store. That said, he’s sold me good things #woodchat

@uppercutwood: I have a new, contractor version, of the Stanley Block Plane. With tuning and honing this plane works fine. #woodchat

@sleepydogwood: I like jet clamps the best out of the ones I have used #woodchat

@asliceofwood: @HighRockWW great! how are you chris? #woodchat

@TheRealNeal: I’d like to start getting more hand saws and a good brace. Any suggestions on brands and what to look for? #woodchat

@imaginer99: Is it better to store planes on the side or bottom down? #woodchat

@UserOfWood: i’ve had good luck with josh at http://t.co/iXRDjWIK #woodchat

@thewoodninja: Got a great deal @ Woodcraft on #4, 5, & 6 Groz bench planes. $85 + shipping. Very pleased with them. #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: know your price limit, and keep looking, if not, its the market RT @asliceofwood: @TheRealNeal prices can sky rocket quick on ebay #woodchat

@swedishiron: Hey Guys.. new to #woodchat I’ve had the best luck buying my tools at auctions.. there are good auctions where the ebay seller buy #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson: On the plus side, my father in law retired being a mechanic and I got a whole bunch of his tools — no woodworking tools though #woodchat

@JinkerPlex: @Torch02 Good tip. I’m still trying to figure out what I want, I suppose. #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy: @asliceofwood @TheRealNeal Yeah, ebay auctions can ratchet up quick. Sometimes you can snipe a deal, but not often #woodchat

@imaginer99: @TheRealNeal Same here, tried sharpening some old ones but need to look at what’s out there #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: Disston saws and a good book on saw sharpening RT @TheRealNeal: Id like to start getting more hand saws … #woodchat

@JinkerPlex: Is it just me or are Josh’s prices generally much lower than Patrick Leach’s? #woodchat

@DyamiPlotke: Hello. #woodchat

@csp2430: @imaginer99 I store them bottom down – gently. #woodchat

@sduffy68: Was $20 to much for a Stanley No6C?#woodchat

@Torch02: @asliceofwood @TheRealNeal The urban legend is used LN planes selling for more on eBay than new ones cost direct! #woodchat

@DJOfurnituremkr: @imaginer99 Store on bottom if on wood. You risk a cut when stored on side. #woodchat

@asliceofwood: @WoodworkGuy especially on much needed tools or tools that can be easily restored #woodchat

@kweinert: I got a perfectly servicable 14” bandsaw from Craigslist – 20 years old or so but it did a fine job. #woodchat

@asliceofwood: @Torch02 I don’t doubt that. SCAMMERS #woodchat

@mitwoodworks: I stoere my planes on te sole sitting on cork #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: ditto RT @csp2430: @imaginer99 I store them bottom down – gently. #woodchat

@csp2430: Hi to everyone saying Hi. #woodchat

@sleepydogwood: I found a nice rip saw today for $5 but it needs some TLC but I think it will be worth the work #woodchat

@dividedlight: @Torch02 If only I kept my boxes. #woodchat

@uppercutwood: Many plans will tell you what tools you need to complete the project. Thos. Moser’s book is a good one http://t.co/jALdzZrP #woodchat

@imaginer99: @DJOfurnituremkr @csp2430 not worried about cut, just the keeping the edge #woodchat

@TheRealNeal: @Torch02 I’ve seen them get real close. Don’t undersatnd the mentality there #woodchat

@Torch02: @asliceofwood Not scamming, so much as the thrill of the auction #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy: @TheRealNeal Ron Herman’s sharpening DVD from PopWood is great to learn how to sharpen. #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson: I’ve heard many people say they’ve had luck on Craiglist, but I don’t have the time to watch every hour. #woodchat

@csp2430: I have to stop buying saws at flea markets and learn to sharpen the ones I have. #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: No ,sound about right RT @sduffy68: Was $20 to much for a Stanley No6C? #woodchat

@uppercutwood: Buying old tools and fixing them up is a great option. High quality, low cost, and you have to learn how to maintain them. #woodchat

@uppercutwood: RT @WoodworkGuy: @TheRealNeal Ron Hermans sharpening DVD from PopWood is great to learn how to sharpen. #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson: @csp2430 Maybe I need to find some local flea markets! #woodchat

@imaginer99: @uppercutwood Thanks i needed this! #woodchat

@asliceofwood: @benjamenjohnson thats what craigslist on smartphones is phone. you can always check on the go #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: You need to know if they’re worth it first RESEARCH! RT @uppercutwood: Buying old tools and fixing them up is a great option. … #woodchat

@thewoodninja: Anyone have thoughts on the Scary Sharp system? #woodchat

@uppercutwood: Sounds like a good price to me RT @sduffy68: Was $20 to much for a Stanley No6C? #woodchat

@JinkerPlex: @benjamenjohnson There is a site called heycraig that will e-mail you when your search terms come up on Craigslist. i.e.”Bandsaw” #woodchat

@asliceofwood: @thewoodninja where is that sold? #woodchat

@HighRockWW: @benjamenjohnson the best deals I have found are from local online auctions #woodchat

@uppercutwood: RT @JinkerPlex: There is a site called heycraig that will e-mail you when your search terms come up on Craigslist. i.e.”Bandsaw” #woodchat

@csp2430: Restoring is a good start on learning to maintain them. RT @uppercutwood: Buying old tools and fixing them up is a great option. #woodchat

@sduffy68: I bought a Delta Jointer on Craigslist was fairly satisfied after tuning it a bit. #woodchat

@TheRealNeal: @uppercutwood I’m thinking more about brand/model (Disston, etc.) I’ll get to sharpening later 🙂 #woodchat

@JinkerPlex: @HighRockWW Yeah, are those the auctions you and Todd never tell me about? 🙂 #woodchat

@uppercutwood: Anyone ever had good luck at Estate Sales (olddeadwoodworkers..com) #woodchat

@thewoodninja: @asliceofwood It isn’t that I know of. Just using varying grits of sandpaper for sharpening. #woodchat

@HighRockWW: RT @JinkerPlex: @benjamenjohnson There is a site called heycraig that will e-mail you when your search terms come up on Craigslist. i.e.”Bandsaw” #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson: @JinkerPlex Thanks, I’ll look into that! #woodchat

@sduffy68: I bought the 6C plane at a pawn shop. #woodchat

@uppercutwood: Has anyone used Rob Cosman’s Hand Plane Revival DVD? I’ve enjoyed it and the IBC blade. #woodchat

@DyamiPlotke: @sduffy68 Glad it tuned up nicely. Did you have 2 travel far for it? I had to go the next state over 2 get my craig’s list jointer #woodchat

@kweinert: On Craigslist out here in Denver I either see stuff that’s not worth looking at or it’s like this: DELTA UNISAW table saw – $1200 #woodchat

@asliceofwood: @thewoodninja ha, ok. you can tell I haven’t done any sharpening. #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy: @sleepydogwood I’ve been using Electrolysis as a rust remover with great results! Bigger stuff I use Evaporust. #woodchat

@uppercutwood: I am having old planes restored by Steve Nisbett – the guy on eBay that re-machines planes #woodchat

@HighRockWW: @thewoodninja it works great but I prefer stones… #woodchat

@sduffy68: In my area there are some good estate sales but most do not turn up quality tools. Sort of luck of the draw. #woodchat

@swedishiron: @kweinert the Denver Craigslist rarely lists old hand tools.. well at reasonable prices #woodchat

@csp2430: Evaporust works great. For surface rust, I like to use citric acid. #woodchat

@thewoodninja: @asliceofwood Me either. I just got some new planes today & it seems like the cheaper option to start. #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson: @thewoodninja Hmm last tweet didn’t go through. I use scary sharp. It’s easy if stuff is already sharp. not so easy otherwise #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: Works fine, RT @asliceofwood varying grits of sandpaper for sharpening. Get a piece of broken granite from a counter guy (free) #woodchat

@uppercutwood: I use my Tormek to regrind a bevel and Sigma Water stones to hone #woodchat

@JimAAshley: Hi folks! Sorry a bit late… we have company at the house, so may be back and forth some. #woodchat

@asliceofwood: @HighRockWW where do you get your stones from? #woodchat

@UserOfWood: @uppercutwood for vintage stereo equipment, but not tools :)#woodchat

@sduffy68: @dyamiplotke had to drive 2.5 hours from WV to VA #woodchat

@HighRockWW: @JinkerPlex yea I picked up a LN #7 for $100 new condition. #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @JimAAshley glad you’re here #woodchat

@thewoodninja: @HighRockWW What’s your best guess of cost to get the required stones etc. to get started? #woodchat

@asliceofwood: @thewoodninja i might get some planes for Christmas (maybe) and i need to learn to sharpen #woodchat

@sleepydogwood: don’t forget refurbished tools they can be a great deal and most have at least a year warranty #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: The best option, if you can afford it is to buy LN new. You CAN’t go wrong with them, except the empty wallet…#woodchat

@HighRockWW: @JinkerPlex I still get emails from them on new actions but not tools lately. I will let you know the next time #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @thewoodninja depends on the stones, king stones are cheap. I got the Sigmas. Sandpaper works too. #woodchat

@JimAAshley: @uppercutwood thanks! #woodchat

@JinkerPlex: @HighRockWW Rub it in, dude. 🙂 #woodchat

@mitwoodworks: @HighRockWW A $100? You stole that thing for that price! #woodchat

@LaMacchiaDesign: #woodchat what’s up everyone? Glad to be here.

@DyamiPlotke: @sduffy68 Not too bad. I had to go from Long Island to Mid Connecticut. About the same time. #woodchat

@DyamiPlotke: @LaMacchiaDesign Hello. #woodchat

@TheRealNeal: @MansFineFurn Therein lies the problem-wallet’s already empty 🙂 #woodchat

@csp2430: Veritas are excellent planes, as well. Bit cheaper than LN. #woodchat

@thewoodninja: @asliceofwood Without having used LN or Lee Valley to compare, I’m impressed with the Groz from Woodcraft #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy: @kweinert Some people are just too proud of their stuff. Got lucky on ebay with a Craftsman 10” saw in great condition for $110. #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @asliceofwood sharpening is not hard. Lie Nielson teaches you on youtube and has plans for their sharpening helper jig #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @LaMacchiaDesign Glad you could make it #woodchat

@uppercutwood: RT @thewoodninja: @asliceofwood Without having used LN or Lee Valley to compare, Im impressed with the Groz from Woodcraft #woodchat

@HighRockWW: @asliceofwood @highlandwood is here in Atlanta so I go there #woodchat

@asliceofwood: @thewoodninja i thought about those. did you get the package deal? #woodchat

@sduffy68: @DyamiPlotke Here in my area there just isn’t the market for older quality tools or newer power tools. Its luck or junk. #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: Not a fan of their blade adjusters but love LV in general RT @csp2430: Veritas are excellent planes, as well. Bit cheaper than LN. #woodchat

@uppercutwood: LUCKY! RT @HighRockWW: @asliceofwood @highlandwood is here in Atlanta so I go there #woodchat

@JinkerPlex: I try to buy quality tools so that I know the problem is me, not the tool. #woodchat

@csp2430: Just have to make sure you can recognize ‘sharp’. RT @uppercutwood: @asliceofwood sharpening is not hard. #woodchat

@DyamiPlotke: @thewoodninja Did you have to tune the Groz much? #woodchat

@thewoodninja: @asliceofwood Negative. Individually bought #4, 5, & 6. $85 + shipping #woodchat

@sleepydogwood: @uppercutwood I just got a IBC blade chip breaker and they are pretty nice but I still think I like Hock blades better #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @JinkerPlex good point Aaron, don’t buy expensive tools until the tools are holding you back, not your skills #woodchat

@DyamiPlotke: @JinkerPlex I’m the same, though sometimes I break the tools and I say that’s the tool, not me. #woodchat

@asliceofwood: @thewoodninja ok #woodchat

@sduffy68: Anyone have luck with the Wood River planes from Woodcraft? #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @sleepydogwood What do you like better about the hock blades #woodchat

@LaMacchiaDesign: #woodchat I like my LN, Veritas, and old Stanley planes. They each come with pros and cons.

@TheRealNeal: I have a few of the Woodriver planes-the low angle block plane is excellent. #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: @TheRealNeal Get an old stanley plane and just buy a new iron (LN/Woodcraft/Hock) Makes a HUGE difference (Love the HOCK) #woodchat

@Torch02: I would like to thank #woodchat for making the rest of my timeline unreadable 😉

@WoodworkGuy: @asliceofwood I like the L-N sharpening kit and the sharpening article in the 8/10 FWW #woodchat

@uppercutwood: When the reason you can’t get a good surface is the plane, not your sharpening or planing skills, then maybe get a new plane #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson: How about pawn shops? 1) I Never find good deals 2) I don’t want fenced goods — at least I’ve heard. #woodchat

@thewoodninja: @DyamiPlotke I paid the extra $3.50 for the sharpening service & was making shavings in less than 10 mins. Still need honing tho #woodchat

@DJOfurnituremkr: Anyone think about trying Japanese planes or building your own Krenov style? #woodchat

@DyamiPlotke: @sduffy68 Shannon tried them in a view recently. He said there were nice, but not quite a Lie-Nielson. #woodchat

@sharpendwood: The woodriver stuff seems to be good entry level, no? #woodchat

@asliceofwood: how difficult is it to build a hand plane? is it cheaper? #woodchat

@HighRockWW: @JinkerPlex lol…who me..:) #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: Yes, IMHO, RT @sharpendwood: The woodriver stuff seems to be good entry level, no? #woodchat

@sharpendwood: RT @DJOfurnituremkr: Anyone think about trying Japanese planes or building your own Krenov style? #woodchat

@UserOfWood: @DJOfurnituremkr i made a wooden plane from a Hock kit. it was fun and worked really well #woodchat

@kweinert: I had a 6” jointer and 18/36 drum sander shipped from NY to Denver. Bought off a WW met on Charles Neil’s site #woodchat

@sonicfedora: Just got here. If we are talking about woodriver planes… I have the 6. I’m happy with it. My next plane will be a lv though.#woodchat

@uppercutwood: @asliceofwood it’s not hard. @morton just built one from a hock kit #woodchat

@LaMacchiaDesign: Thats my next plane direction RT @DJOfurnituremkr: Anyone think about trying Japanese planes or building your own Krenov style? #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: @kweinert how much was shipping? #woodchat

@imaginer99: @asliceofwood I saw a video on it and it looked pretty easy. Plan on building a couple myself! #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy: @DJOfurnituremkr I’ve thought of taking a shot at a Hock Krenov kit. #woodchat

@sduffy68: @DyamiPlotke I consider LN and Veritas to have higher expectations, but the Wood Rivers are more in my price range. #woodchat

@asliceofwood: @uppercutwood is it cheaper? #woodchat

@mitwoodworks: @sharpendwood I’ve built a couple of them and I have one built by Krenov himself1 #woodchat

@TheRealNeal: I watched that. Made me want to get one! RT @uppercutwood: @asliceofwood its not hard. @morton just built one from a hock kit #woodchat

@kweinert: @MansFineFurn Around $200/$250 as I recall. #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @WoodworkGuy do it! it’s not that hard and you can shape the plane anyway you want. Report back on your build 🙂 #woodchat

@DJOfurnituremkr: Japanese planes are my favorite: http://t.co/tbZhtH50 #woodchat

@UserOfWood: @DJOfurnituremkr here’s the one i made. http://t.co/xj0OJoue #woodchat

@Black_SheepWW: I have all king stones except my 8000 great is a norton. all have worked well. Purchased at woodcraft. #woodchat

@HighRockWW: @DJOfurnituremkr I have built several Krenov style planes including my G&G planes and love them with Hock irons #woodchat

@sleepydogwood: I think I just like doing business with Ron Hock better than IBC #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @DJOfurnituremkr I’m trying to avoid the japanese tool trend, I’m not good at my current culture of tools yet #woodchat

@DJOfurnituremkr: @UserOfWood Very nice! I really like the Hock blades. #woodchat

@imaginer99: @UserOfWood Nice! #woodchat

@csp2430: Nice work. RT @UserOfWood: @DJOfurnituremkr heres the one i made. http://t.co/sBIctZ67 #woodchat

@DyamiPlotke: @sleepydogwood I can full appreciate that, Hock is a great guy. Is there any difference in performance? #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy: @uppercutwood I want the kit so I can get a hands-on idea on the design. Read Krenov’s books but want something tangible #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson: @UserOfWood Nice, Maybe I’ll have to try one. #woodchat

@asliceofwood: can you get a cheap plane and just use the parts for a build? #woodchat

@mitwoodworks: @sleepydogwood i’ll second that! I’d rather give me money to Ron Hock #woodchat

@uppercutwood: We’ve talked a lot about hand tools and buying them. Regarding care of tools, does everyone have a Wooby for their hand tools? #woodchat

@JimAAshley: Only Japanese tool I have is a flush cut saw. #woodchat

@UserOfWood: @benjamenjohnson it’s a fun project, and not that hard #woodchat

@LaMacchiaDesign: #woodchat I have a set of Norton’s which are ok. I also have a Japanese stone that I really like. I’d like to try ceramic next.

@Torch02: @sduffy68 @DyamiPlotke There’s also something to be said for buying something handmade locally instead of mass-produced from China #woodchat

@thewoodninja: How about a vote for the very first tool to buy when getting started? #woodchat

@JinkerPlex: @uppercutwood School me, Matt. What the heck is a woobie? #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson: @uppercutwood What’s a Wooby? #woodchat

@DyamiPlotke: @uppercutwood I have a wooby sitting around and some oil for it, but I’ve never used it. #woodchat

@DJOfurnituremkr: @WoodworkGuy David Finck has a good book on making wood planes: http://t.co/uDxocfZy #woodchat

@csp2430: yea, but I hate Chris S’s name for it. RT @uppercutwood: Regarding care of tools, does everyone have a Wooby for their hand tools? #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy: @DJOfurnituremkr @UserOfWood I want to get a couple of Hock blades for my 65 block and No 4. Just order them with the Krenov kit! #woodchat

@sleepydogwood: I not gotten to use or sharpen them enough to tell the IBC does come sharpened and the Hock needs to be honed but besides that #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: Define Wooby please? RT @uppercutwood:. Regarding care of tools, does everyone have a Wooby for their hand tools? #woodchat

@HighRockWW: @asliceofwood cheap planes normally have thin irons, better off buying a decent iron #woodchat

@uppercutwood: Old oily rag for wiping down tools. Rust prevention. RT @benjamenjohnson: @uppercutwood Whats a Wooby? #woodchat

@sduffy68: @Torch02 agreed, but sometimes price is the ring that rules them all. #woodchat

@csp2430: It’s an oily rag. #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy: @Torch02 TOTALLY AGREE! #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @csp2430 What is your name for it. #woodchat

@UserOfWood: @WoodworkGuy i’ve bought some of Hock’s replacement blades and really like them #woodchat

@sduffy68: Do you have to sharpen a wooby? — Just Kidding!!! #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: @uppercutwood rag with oil #woodchat

@csp2430: Oily rag? But I guess I never actually call it anything.@uppercutwood #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson: On the Wooby, I’ve never had a rust problem in my shop. So I don’t use one #woodchat

@asliceofwood: Thats a complicated name. RT @MansFineFurn: @uppercutwood rag with oil #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy: @uppercutwood Yes. A wooby soaked in Jojoba oil. #woodchat

@JinkerPlex: Oily rag, huh? Then I have a ton of them under my old beater car. #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @benjamenjohnson I live in Washington. Our skin rusts. #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: Bag full of microfiber rags at Home depot ~$5, 8oz bottle of camellia oil, ~$20 #woodchat

@sleepydogwood: I made a plane last night #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @sleepydogwood pictures? #woodchat

@thewoodninja: I can’t say I didn’t learn anything tonight. I now know what a wooby is! #woodchat

@Morton: @WoodworkGuy @uppercutwood that’s why I started with a hock kit. Training wheels. Then jump off from there. Ron is an awesome guy. #woodchat

@csp2430: Yep that’s what I use. RT @MansFineFurn: Bag full of microfiber rags at Home depot ~$5, 8oz bottle of camellia oil, ~$20 #woodchat

@imaginer99: I’ve never had a problem with rust, are you in a humid climate? #Woodchat

@FlairWoodworks: I don’t want to hear that you were causing trouble at #woodchat tonight because I wasn’t around to keep an eye out 🙂

@UserOfWood: @uppercutwood i’m up in Bothell not far from you #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: My favorite tool: Stanley #80 scraper, best buy ever #woodchat

@HighRockWW: @sleepydogwood well let’s see it …. #woodchat

@uppercutwood: Let’s talk about power hand tools. What power hand tools, what brands, and what sources? #woodchat

@uppercutwood: I need a new handheld router, any experience with the PC 890? #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy: @uppercutwood LOL #woodchat

@dividedlight: @imaginer99 I live in the northeast and rust is a problem. Weather change. #woodchat

@csp2430: I used to live in a dry climate. Now 1 kilometre from the Pacific Ocean with sub tropical rainforest at the end of the road. Yikes #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: Rather broad, can you narrow scope?RT @uppercutwood: … power hand tools. What power hand tools, what brands, and what sources? #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson: I’m partial to my Dewalt 14.4 driver with *gasp* Nicads. #woodchat

@DavidJUlschmid: @uppercutwood #woodchat Power to the people! I like DeWalt but Hitachi has been doing good in reviews lately

@uppercutwood: @UserOfWood Dude I should come crash at your house, eat your food, and mess up your shop! 🙂 #woodchat

@asliceofwood: @dividedlight everything rusts up there #woodchat

@JinkerPlex: @uppercutwood No opinion on the PC 890, but the consensus vote when I bought last year was the Bosch kit. #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: It’s ok, not as good as the older version RT @uppercutwood: I need a new handheld router, any experience with the PC 890? #woodchat

@dividedlight: @uppercutwood I have three and I like them a lot. #woodchat

@csp2430: Triton routers are great! #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @JinkerPlex did you get the Bosch kit, which one? #woodchat

@imaginer99: I like dewalt also but rigid usually has similar quality but lower price. #Woodchat

@UserOfWood: @uppercutwood funny, but we should hook up, we are starting up a Modern Woodworkers Assoc here in Seattle #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy: @uppercutwood Looked at the 890. Nice unit. Got a better deal on Hitachi M12VC and really like it. #woodchat

@DyamiPlotke: @benjamenjohnson no gasping. I’ve dumped almost all my NiCads. #woodchat

@HighRockWW: @DavidJUlschmid @asliceofwood yea it is ridiculous some of the things they pass off as tools #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @dividedlight You have three of the PC890s? #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: Love my little Bosch Colt, use it for lots of things instead of the bigger routers #woodchat

@Black_SheepWW: Very happy with the Bosch plung Router

@sduffy68: @JinkerPlex was it the 1617 evs kit? I am considering it, but was looking for confirmation. #woodchat

@DavidJUlschmid: @uppercutwood #woodchat All my routers are Craftsman. Figure if I’ll be able to frankentool them if they break. Yay for electronics skills!

@LaMacchiaDesign: Agreed RT @MansFineFurn: Love my little Bosch Colt, use it for lots of things instead of the bigger routers #woodchat

@TheRealNeal: Let’s see how many @DyamiPlotke has 🙂 RT @uppercutwood: @dividedlight You have three of the PC890s? #woodchat

@imaginer99: @UserOfWood I’ll remember , trying to move up to that area soon! #Woodchat

@JinkerPlex: @uppercutwood I got the Bosch 1617, 2.25hp comes with fixed and mobile base. Love it so far. #woodchat

@uppercutwood: I want soft start, variable speed, 1/2” collet, pc bushings. dust collection, lighting, are extras. #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson: @uppercutwood I have an older 690. Been pretty solid for years. Not much experience hand held, it’s usually in my table #woodchat

@asliceofwood: I got a craftsman…works good so far #woodchat

@DyamiPlotke: @TheRealNeal I only have one PC890, but I have 9 routers overall. #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @LaMacchiaDesign the colt doesn’t have a 1/2” collet #woodchat

@ebeckham29: Hello #woodchat#woodchat

@dividedlight: @uppercutwood two mounted in router tables and one hand held with two bases. I don’t care for the plunge base.#woodchat

@thewoodninja: I have the PC 693 w/fixed & plunge bases. Love it. #woodchat

@sleepydogwood: http://t.co/WRcLi9NF #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson: @MansFineFurn I love mine after I returned the first one that burnt out after an hour. #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @benjamenjohnson My 690 almost cut my cajones off the other day #woodchat

@Seanw78: @JinkerPlex I’ve gotten a few things from hyperkitten. Dividers and a brace I needed. #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: nope, it’s only flaw RT @uppercutwood: @LaMacchiaDesign the colt doesnt have a 1/2” collet #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @DyamiPlotke of all your routers, how do you like the 890 #woodchat

@JinkerPlex: @sduffy68 Only quirk so far on the Bosch 1617 is that you can’t use typical PC style bushings. #woodchat

@imaginer99: @uppercutwood I have a plunge craftsman 3hp, it’s big but does everything! #Woodchat

@DavidJUlschmid: @dividedlight #woodchat. Do you make wood and glass projects? I love the combination. I’d love to hear some design/building tips!

@uppercutwood: @MansFineFurn the Colt height adjustment is also crap. the base is also too small. I got an aftermarket base. #woodchat

@sduffy68: @JinkerPlex whats the workaround? for the PC bushings. #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @JinkerPlex the Bosch proprietary bushing system is dumb #woodchat

@imaginer99: @uppercutwood I’m curious , does your router hang low? #Woodchat

@TheRealNeal: Good to know! RT @DyamiPlotke: @TheRealNeal I only have one PC890, but I have 9 routers overall. #woodchat

@LaMacchiaDesign: Ouch RT @uppercutwood: @benjamenjohnson My 690 almost cut my cajones off the other day #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson: @uppercutwood Yeah, mine sent me to the emergency room earlier this year. Stung like a bastard, no permanent damage #woodchat

@JinkerPlex: @uppercutwood More Bosch 1617: You can buy adapter that accepts standard PC bushings. Ring inside a ring inside a ring, but works. #woodchat

@Seanw78: @sleepydogwood I second the jet clamps #woodchat

@dividedlight: @DavidJUlschmid I do. I had big plans for artsy projects but I mostly build windows and doors for houses. #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson: @DavidJUlschmid I’d like to try glass etching, It looks pretty easy to do. #woodchat

@csp2430: Better than Besseys? RT @Seanw78: @sleepydogwood I second the jet clamps #woodchat

@DyamiPlotke: @uppercutwood I haven’t used my 890 too much. I like my Bosch 1617EVS best. #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: @uppercutwood Don’t used the depth adjustment as much, but it’s never slowed me down to badly, it’s not a plunge router afterall #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy: Found a great way to get the SWMBO happy. She wanted to learn to scroll saw. Now she’s into woodworking! #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @JinkerPlex still dumb #woodchat

@DyamiPlotke: @JinkerPlex You can also replace the black base with a clear base. #woodchat

@sduffy68: @dividedlight do you build exterior entry doors? #woodchat

@sleepydogwood: I have seven routers and I just got a new Ridgit the little one I like #woodchat

@DavidJUlschmid: @dividedlight Have you done stained glass? Foil or came? #woodchat

@JinkerPlex: @DyamiPlotke like mine best too, but only competition in my shop is a freebie Ryobi I was gifted. What a POS. #woodchat

@dividedlight: @DavidJUlschmid I’m going to start a blog this winter. #woodchat

@Black_SheepWW: The Bosh have soft start. #woodchat

@LaMacchiaDesign: Yeah i dont like how the base and motor body interact, very clumsy & awkward adjusting RT @uppercutwood: @MansFineFurn. #woodchat

@thewoodninja: Anyone have the big boy Festool router? #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson: I love my 690 mounted in a lift with a digital readout. set it to the depth you want, hit zero, and then back it off #woodchat

@imaginer99: @csp2430 I have both and they both work great but jets are nicer but cost a little extra too. #Woodchat

@sleepydogwood: The older PC are a lot better that the new stuff #woodchat

@JinkerPlex: @DyamiPlotke The clear base is another good route, Dyami. #woodchat

@csp2430: @woodworkguy We have quite a few ladies in our club who like the scroll work and pyrography. Me? – I prefer joinery. #woodchat

@dividedlight: I build entry doors.RT @sduffy68: @dividedlight do you build exterior entry doors? #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @benjamenjohnson I am looking for handheld. I’ll definitely put on a clear base plate. #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: amen: RT @sleepydogwood: The older PC are a lot better that the new stuff #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy: @csp2430 @Seanw78 @sleepydogwood Hmmm.. will have to check Jet clamps out. Need some more… #woodchat

@ebeckham29: Anyone try the Triton brand? I’ve been looking at them @Woodcraft but haven’t ever used them #woodchat

@DavidJUlschmid: @Seanw78 @sleepydogwood #woodchat Hey, Sean Wiz New Ski. What Jet clamps are you referring too? Parallel jaw clamps? I have Ponys.

@benjamenjohnson: @sleepydogwood when hand routing it would be nice to have a built in speed control and soft start, but again mine lives in table #woodchat

@woodshaver101: I like my stanley #45 plane for small runs of molding#woodchat

@WoodworkGuy: @MansFineFurn @sleepydogwood I sadly second that… #woodchat

@csp2430: yep – have 3 – fantastic RT @ebeckham29: Anyone try the Triton brand? Ive been looking at them @Woodcraft but havent ever used the #woodchat

@dividedlight: @DyamiPlotke Although the 890 is tall it seems to balance very well, stable. #woodchat

@sduffy68: @dividedlight one of my future projects will be to rebuild our front door. Its arched top and use to have a round window. #woodchat

@DavidJUlschmid: @dividedlight I totally look forward to that! #woodchat I blog at http://t.co/vXPfzSrO. My best glass project is at http://t.co/JSK0LATD

@sleepydogwood: @ebeckham29 @Woodcraft I looked at them but when I went back to get one they were out #woodchat

@dividedlight: @DavidJUlschmid No. Wooden muntins and stained glass though. #woodchat

@DyamiPlotke: @JinkerPlex Much as I love the PC 890, the PC 690 gets the most work in my shop. #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy: @thewoodninja SWMBO won’t let me refinance for Festool… Like my house is worth anything these days… 🙁 #woodchat

@imaginer99: Does anyone use or recommend scrapers? #Woodchat

@LaMacchiaDesign: #woodchat how about favorite 3hp routers for table mounts?

@uppercutwood: What are the five essential power hand tools? router, circular saw, drill, jigsaw, what else? #woodchat

@ebeckham29: @csp2430 Great they are actually reasonably priced and they normally have them on sale#woodchat

@JimAAshley: the one router I have is Ridgid, which was an upgrade to a Craftsman (1/4” only collet)#woodchat

@Tumblewood: Woodchat is up in G+…check it out when you get a chance. Let us know what you want from #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @imaginer99 yes, scrapers are unbelievable #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: a thousand times YES!!! Best tools ever, card scrapers and the Stanley #80. RT @imaginer99: Does anyone use or recommend scrapers? #woodchat

@sduffy68: @uppercutwood RotoZip LOL #woodchat

@dividedlight: @DavidJUlschmid I can’t remember if I’m following you but I will check later. #woodchat

@csp2430: sander RT @uppercutwood: What are the five essential power hand tools? router, circular saw, drill, jigsaw, what else? #woodchat

@HighRockWW: @ebeckham29 I got an email from @Woodcraft that the Triton 3 1/4hp is on sale for $199 #woodchat

@Tumblewood: I keep getting spammed for using G+ #woodchat

@asliceofwood: any recomendations for buying? RT @uppercutwood: @imaginer99 yes, scrapers are unbelievable #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @JimAAshley How was the Ridgid, it looks good from a feature perspective #woodchat

@ebeckham29: @uppercutwood I think you are right, about essential hand tools although I would add a few sanders #woodchat

@uppercutwood: Dremel

@RT @sduffy68: @uppercutwood RotoZip LOL #woodchat

@JinkerPlex: @uppercutwood Sander maybe? #woodchat

@imaginer99: @MansFineFurn @uppercutwood thanks! I’m looking to get a few. #Woodchat

@Tumblewood: @asliceofwood I just get them a few at a time from Woodcraft or wherever..doesn’t matter much..they all need a good amount of work #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @ebeckham29 Winner winner chicken dinner, a ROS and maybe a detail sander #woodchat

@sleepydogwood: @ebeckham29 Its a shame to I always have like PCs tools my belt sander has lasted 15 years and is going strong. #woodchat

@dividedlight: @sduffy68 Restoration and new? #woodchat

@ebeckham29: @HighRockWW I got that one, I was in there today and saw them and held one, felt pretty good. Just wish I could had trial ran it. #woodchat

@csp2430: The Triton routers are terrific in tables – you don’t need a router lift because they wind up so high #woodchat

@jmk89: @uppercutwood ROS #woodchat

@asliceofwood: my dremel 3000 has worked pretty good so far. RT @uppercutwood: Dremel RT @sduffy68: @uppercutwood RotoZip LOL #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: @Tumblewood what do you mean “spammed”? Haven’t had any issues…yet. #woodchat

@DavidJUlschmid: @MansFineFurn @imaginer99 #woodchat Love me my Sandvik scrapers. Thick for course removal, thin just before finish. Down with sandpaper!

@Tumblewood: @MansFineFurn I’ve got three in my Mentions right now. #woodchat

@asliceofwood: @Tumblewood do they wear out quick? are there different sizes? #woodchat

@JimAAshley: @uppercutwood Ilike it, definitely an upgrade for me. Soft start, variable speed, does both 1/2” and 1/4” bits. Also has LED. #woodchat

@DJOfurnituremkr: Could any of you get by with out a table saw? #woodchat

@ebeckham29: @sleepydogwood We had a few PC sanders come through our shelter’s thrift store today, flew out the door before I could get there #woodchat

@HighRockWW: @ebeckham29 I may pick one up this weekend… #woodchat

@JimAAshley: @uppercutwood I got it on deal from HD, was display unit. #woodchat

@imaginer99: @DJOfurnituremkr Are you serious? No, not me #Woodchat

@uppercutwood: maybe if you have a good bandsaw RT @DJOfurnituremkr: Could any of you get by with out a table saw? #woodchat

@csp2430: No. I’m in love with my Powermatic. RT @DJOfurnituremkr: Could any of you get by with out a table saw? #woodchat

@Tumblewood: @DJOfurnituremkr i could..but, I have room and don’t see the need to do without #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson: @DJOfurnituremkr NO, you can pry my table saw from my cold dead hands! #woodchat

@UserOfWood: @DJOfurnituremkr it would be hard for me, but a band saw could replace a TS for most of what i do #woodchat

@dividedlight: @DJOfurnituremkr No way. #woodchat

@Tumblewood: @UserOfWood Word…I want a 20” BS #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: DITTO: RT @DavidJUlschmid: @MansFineFurn @imaginer99 #woodchat Love me my Sandvik scrapers. #woodchat

@sduffy68: @dividedlight My mother had the door replaced 10-12 years ago and they put in a solid slab. So I will be replacing new. #woodchat

@thewoodninja: @asliceofwood Don’t buy until you have the $$$ to get a good file & burnishing rod. They need to be sharp to work right. #woodchat

@mitwoodworks: @DJOfurnituremkr Maybe if I had a quality bandsaw #woodchat

@kweinert: @DJOfurnituremkr Right now I am, but that’s because I’m very limited in space, been turning lately. Bandsaw would work for me. #woodchat

@sleepydogwood: @uppercutwood I have the palm size Ridgit and its a good strong router I like that it came with a edge guide and two bases #woodchat

@LaMacchiaDesign: Yes but I really love my TS and probably wouldn’t consider it. RT @DJOfurnituremkr: Could any of you get by with out a table saw? #woodchat

@Tumblewood: @thewoodninja Depends on what you use them for. @ToddinMontana has a great vid on using them for more agressive work #woodchat

@DavidJUlschmid: @DJOfurnituremkr I don’t think I could make it without a table saw. Do have respect for my 18” band saw. Do you use a table saw? #woodchat

@TheRealNeal: @JimAAshley @uppercutwood I have the Rigid as well. Very well made, the highest quality power tool I have (not sayin’ much) #woodchat

@uppercutwood: Ten minutes left what questions can we help people with? #woodchat

@asliceofwood: hmmm…guess I got to wait a little while RT @thewoodninja: @asliceofwood Dont buy until you have the $$$ to get a good file & bur #woodchat

@ebeckham29: @HighRockWW If I wasn’t flying to Maine and having my lil girl, I might. Might get to run by LN store its only 45 mins away #woodchat

@thewoodninja: @DJOfurnituremkr Not me. It’s the heart of my shop. #woodchat

@csp2430: Anyone like Yankee screwdrivers like I do? #woodchat

@DyamiPlotke: @uppercutwood 12 volt drill, router, jig saw, Random Orbit sander & another sander (or router) #woodchat

@DJOfurnituremkr: I would take an Aggazzani 24” band saw over a Saw Stop any day. #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: Yes, I think so, Bandsaw and handtools can do most of it . RT @DJOfurnituremkr: Could any of you get by with out a table saw? #woodchat

@woodshaver101: @DJOfurnituremkr THEY ARE GOING TO BURY ME WITH MY OLD UNISAW #woodchat

@Tumblewood: @DJOfurnituremkr BS is much safer than a TS any day. #woodchat

@JimAAshley: @TheRealNeal Nice! Yeah, I’ve learned a lot from my early tool purchases. #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson: RT @woodshaver101: @DJOfurnituremkr THEY ARE GOING TO BURY ME WITH MY OLD UNISAW YES! #woodchat

@sleepydogwood: I could for the furniture I build but not the carpentry or mill work I do #woodchat

@uppercutwood: Everyone knows to avoid harbor freight power tools, right? :0 #woodchat

@woodshaver101: @DJOfurnituremkr i LIKE MY OLD INCA 710 BANDSAW,i COULD GET BY WITH THAT #woodchat

@imaginer99: What degree do you it on your bench and mortifying chisels? #Woodchat

@DyamiPlotke: Anyone have the new DeWalt DWP611 routers? #woodchat

@JinkerPlex: @uppercutwood could get by without a TS. Have you seen that guy rip boards by hand? Ouch! #woodchat

@JimAAshley: @TheRealNeal @uppercutwood Nice! Yeah, I’ve learned a lot from my early tool purchases. #woodchat

@jmk89: @csp2430 Yes, I reckon Yankee screwdrivers are the forgotten gem of tools #woodchat

@asliceofwood: I got a drill press as gift. not impressed RT @uppercutwood: Everyone knows to avoid harbor freight power tools, right? :0 #woodchat

@thewoodninja: @uppercutwood harbor who? #woodchat

@ebeckham29: @uppercutwood I’ve actually found a few harbor freight tools that work decent… as paper weights #woodchat

@Tumblewood: RT @Tumblewood: Hey Everyone..be sure to Add Woodchat to your G+ circles. #woodchat

@Torch02: @DJOfurnituremkr ‘Yes’ for everyone – we all could; we’re too resourceful to not be able to. But that doesn’t mean we should #woodchat

@DJOfurnituremkr: @woodshaver101 That is a great saw. #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson: @uppercutwood I have a friend that swears by them. I don’t risk it though #woodchat

@TheRealNeal: @JimAAshley My previous one was Craftsman too-a real cheap one that my dad bought in the early eighties-night and day. #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy: I am hoping to get a 14” bandsaw soon for resawing and other things. #woodchat

@sleepydogwood: @csp2430 I love my yankee and with a bit holder it even is better #woodchat

@Seanw78: @DavidJUlschmid @sleepydogwood I’ve got the parallels and f style. Grips are great, work smooth. #woodchat

@Tumblewood: @asliceofwood HF is only good for bits and pieces.#woodchat

@theodorescott: @DJOfurnituremkr I am getting rid of mine within the next month. #woodchat

@DavidJUlschmid: RT @ebeckham29: @uppercutwood I’ve actually found a few harbor freight tools that work decent… as paper weights #woodchat

@Tumblewood: Matt..you grabbing the transcript for tonights #woodchat???

@thewoodninja: @WoodworkGuy Get a Wood Slicer blade! Got mine today & LOVE it! #woodchat

@csp2430: yes – needs the bit holder RT @sleepydogwood: @csp2430 I love my yankee and with a bit holder it even is better #woodchat

@asliceofwood: You have to be selective on the purchase RT @Tumblewood: @asliceofwood HF is only good for bits and pieces #woodchat

@blowery: @DJOfurnituremkr I sold mine and I’m getting by. Have my eyes on a decent bandsaw though, mostly for long rips and resawing. #woodchat

@sduffy68: Made the big mistake of jumping into an inexpensive craftman TS early on and to date haven’t replaced it. Any suggestions on used? #woodchat

@Tumblewood: @thewoodninja I use timberwolf..have a Resaw King, too #woodchat

@DavidJUlschmid: @Seanw78 @sleepydogwood #woodchat. I need some new F-Styles. I’ll check out the Jets. Where do you get them?

@ebeckham29: @WoodworkGuy I hope to get one eventually, I was looking at the Rikon’s seem to be decent. Better then my 10” ryobi #woodchat

@Tumblewood: The Resaw King is overpriced in my opinion #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: Thoughts on the the Wood Slicer Bandsaw blades from highland ww? #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson: thewoodninja @WoodworkGuy Get a Wood Slicer blade! Got mine today & LOVE it!— I need a bandsaw first #woodchat

@Tumblewood: @MansFineFurn I hear good things #woodchat

@JimAAshley: @DavidJUlschmid @ebeckham29 @uppercutwood. my dust collector is HF, that’s the only thing though I have from them. #woodchat

@JinkerPlex: @sduffy68 I got a Grizzly cabinet saw on Craigslist, but really you just have to shop the deals for used stuff. #woodchat

@UserOfWood: @MansFineFurn i use woodslicer blades and really like them #woodchat

@asliceofwood: @JimAAshley how is that dc? #woodchat

@Tumblewood: @thewoodninja be sure to use the loose tension…they do a good job of resawing #woodchat

@DavidJUlschmid: @thewoodninja @WoodworkGuy #woodchat I second the Wood Slicer recommendation. Smooth cuts and they somehow demand less power from the motor

@sduffy68: QUESTION – What to look out for on used Dust Collection? #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: Wood Slicer: I’ve had mixed results: First one dulled REALLY fast, current one, going strong #woodchat

@thewoodninja: @DavidJUlschmid My thoughts exactly #woodchat

@uppercutwood: Thanks everyone for showing up tonight, we’ll post the transcript on a few sites tomorrow. #woodchat

@Seanw78: @DavidJUlschmid @sleepydogwood think I got them from rockler on sale a few years ago. Not sure where now. #woodchat

@DyamiPlotke: @sduffy68 look for a motor that runs and a unit you can replace the filter on. #woodchat

@Tumblewood: RT @Tumblewood: @sduffy68 open the housing and look at the windings #windings #woodchat

@kweinert: I have a benchtop DP from HF – have yet to get to drill without wobbling. #woodchat

@ebeckham29: @JinkerPlex agreed I just got 7 18v Rigid drills 15 batteries and 5 chargers for $40 and only 3 of the bats. are bad #woodchat

@sduffy68: Kinda what I figured RT @JinkerPlex: @sduffy68 I got a Grizzly cabinet saw on Craigslist, but really you just have to shop the… #woodchat

@DavidJUlschmid: @thewoodninja @Tumblewood #woodchat I had a timberwolf. Wood slicer is superior IMHO

@JimAAshley: @asliceofwood It sucks (ha, ha)… seriously, it works well, don’t have much to compare it to #woodchat

@sleepydogwood: @DavidJUlschmid @Seanw78 I got mine @rockler and they were kits so they were $99 for 4 clamps #woodchat

@benjamenjohnson: Man that went by fast #woodchat

@TheRealNeal: @uppercutwood damn that was quick! #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @sduffy68 check the motor, impeller, and bags. those are the keys #woodchat

@DyamiPlotke: @woodbard hi Al. #woodchat

@asliceofwood: See everyone next week! #woodchat

@csp2430: Thanks all. #woodchat

@Morton: @MansFineFurn careful with the use. Exotics will dull it fast. So will non-straight cuts. #woodchat

@JimAAshley: @woodbard Hi Al. #woodchat

@WoodworkGuy: Great chat all! #woodchat

@LaMacchiaDesign: #woodchat later y’all! Until next time…

@thewoodninja: Thanks for all the great content guys. And thanks for teaching me what a wooby is! #woodchat

@TheRealNeal: @woodbard. Evening Al! #woodchat

@uppercutwood: @sduffy68 it’s all about the sustained static CFM #woodchat

@MansFineFurn: @Tumblewood space I have, using the drill press setup now, but I hate switching it out every time I want to mortise/drill. #woodchat

@Tumblewood: @thewoodninja not just forgiving…functional! #woodchat
